Republican endorsing Paul Davis swapped parties days before announcement

OSAWATOMIE, Kan. — If this isn’t blatant flip-flopping, we don’t know what is.

Earlier this week, Democratic candidate Paul Davis unveiled a list of more than 100 moderate Republicans backing his run for the governor’s office. But yesterday, the campaign was dealt a blow after it turned out Davis’ most high-profile endorser, former U.S. Congresswoman Jan Meyers, actually wasn’t backing the Lawrence Democrat.

On Friday, it isn’t getting any better.

Cynthia Yulich, a former Lawrence USD 497 board of education member, registered as a Republican on July 2, according to the Douglas County Clerk’s Office. But since at least 2008, she was registered as either a Democrat or unaffiliated, said Ben Lampe, deputy county clerk of elections.

Yulich was a registered Republican in Douglas County from at least 1994 through 2006, according to county records. Her recent decision to rejoin her original party came less than two weeks before Republicans for Kansas Values announced its endorsement of Davis.

Kansas Watchdog was unable to reach Yulich for comment Friday morning.
