Port: Sorry, we can’t just use the Legacy Fund to abolish property taxes
MINOT, N.D. — Back in 2012, I supported a ballot measure to eliminate property taxes. We thought it could pass. North Dakotans are eternally irritated with their property tax bills. Politically, it seemed like a no-brainer.
But the opposition to that measure made a good point: How would we replace that revenue without big tax hikes or dramatic cuts to spending on things like schools and parks?
We lost, with nearly 77% of voters casting a ballot against it.
We deserved to lose.
In hindsight, it was a bad idea.
