I’m aware that all candidates have flaws. I make my living writing about the foibles and failures of political figures. But when elections are about beating the other partisan team at all costs, when they require us to look past the obnoxious hypocrisies of our candidates, then our exercise in self-governance becomes a race to the bottom.
