MINOT, N.D. — The sad reality of American politics is that “I’ve governed competently” is not all that an important criteria for someone seeking elected office.
Americans should want boring-but-capable leaders, but that’s like saying we should all be eating more vegetables. What we really want, in terms of food, is pizza and hamburgers. And what we really want, in terms of politicians, particularly in a partisan primary environment, are entertainers.
