“If conservatives who use the word “socialist” to describe their opponents are hysterical and McCarthyite,” asks Charles Cooke at National Review referring to a Gallup poll showing 53% of Democrats viewing socialism positively, “then what are liberals and Democrats who self-describe as such?”
Here are the Gallup results, which also note a disturbing 23% of Republicans who view socialism positively:
The problem, I think, is that in our institutions of education the socialist philosophy is taught with little historical context. The ideals of socialism – equal outcomes for all through government-directed wealth redistribution – sound great to the young naifs eating it up in college. The historical conext, the suffering and tragedy which has occurred everywhere socialism has been tried, doesn’t come into play.
