North Dakota Democrats – Yes, the Democrats – Tout Senator Heitkamp’s Pro-Trump Voting Record
With the NDGOP state convention going on today the North Dakota Democrats have been busy on social media to push their own messaging.
A lot of it is the usual partisan bomb throwing that’s pretty boring, but one tweet caught my eye. It’s a response, I think, to Congressman Kevin Cramer taking this jab at incumbent Senator Heidi Heitkamp during his speech accepting the party’s endorsement for that race today:
Cramer obliquely acknowledged the negative press he garnered this week when, in criticizing Heitkamp’s voting record, he compared voting against the president to cheating on a spouse. That analogy has drawn criticism Cramer is too loyal to the president. Though “much has been said and written” about Heitkamp voting with the president 55 percent of the time, he said on Saturday, that’s not a mark of bipartisanship, but rather an indication she’s wrong for North Dakota.
Democrats are trying to thread a rhetorical needle on Trump. They want to paint Republicans, like Cramer, as being Trump loyalists even as they acknowledge that most North Dakotans voted for Trump in 2016.
So we get stuff like this tweet, touting Senator Heitkamp’s pro-Trump voting record even as they bash Republicans for being too pro-Trump:
.@HeidiHeitkamp’s an independent voice for North Dakota in the senate. She voted w/the President about 70% of the time — but she’ll never be a rubber stamp & will stand up against any proposal that hurts North Dakotans. That’s her commitment to ND.

This is borderline incoherent.
I mean, I get why Democrats feel they have to do this, but still.
