Looking to be the biggest public works project in state history, the OPS bond issue should be before the voters in November.
Folks on both sides of the Omaha Public Schools big bond issue debate admit the size, scope and price-tag is tough to swallow.
Over the past 17 years Nebraska voters have OK’d many major school bond issues—totaling $645 million.
The list includes Omaha’s $254 million in 1999, Lincoln’s $153 million in February, Millard’s $80 million last year.
Add in Hasting’s $21 million in May, Papillion’s $60 million in 2012, Elkhorn’s $50 million in 2011 and Westside’s $27 million in 1997 and you have taxpayers shelling out $645 million.
But that’s still $38 million less than the $683 million bond issue OPS is looking at this year.
