OMAHA—Nebraska nice?
Don’t tell that to federal authorities on the ground in Omaha looking for Election Day dirty tricks in one of the hottest congressional races in the country.
With Republican Congressman Lee Terry and Democrat Brad Ashford locked in a rare too-close-to-call House race the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division is in Douglas County, one of 28 counties in the country under scrutiny.
A second Nebraska county, Colfax— home to one of the state’s largest Hispanic populations—is also on the list.
According to a news release issued by the DOJ “allegations of election fraud” are on the watch list.
The statement goes on to say that officials are specifically interested in:
- Voters, possibly non-English speaking, who are subject to different voting qualifications or procedures based on race or color.
- Blind or disabled voters, as well as those who can’t read or write, and receive assistance from a person of their choice.
- Whether jurisdictions allow voters with disabilities to cast a private and independent ballot.
- Whether jurisdictions comply with federal voter registration and provisional ballot requirements.
The polls are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m in the east and central parts of the state, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the west.
