Even some Obamacare supporters hate Obamacare
By Nic Horton | The Arkansas Project
One of the more ridiculous arguments Arkansas legislators have made in support of the Medicaid expansion “private” option (Republican legislators, in particular) is that the “private” option is a “conservative response to Obamacare.”
Rep. Charlie Collins regularly makes these types of claims on his Twitter feed; Speaker Davy Carter famously said last year that “a vote for the private option is a vote against Obamacare.”
The problem with these theories is that, well, Medicaid expansion is a central aspect of Obamacare. Democratic legislators understand this. Democratic pundits understand this. At least 27 House Republicans understand this. The only people who don’t seem to understand are a few Republican legislators — but even they realize how politically toxic Obamacare is in Arkansas. Because of this realization, they’ve done their best to “re-brand” Obamacare implementation as some sort of “free-market” approach to health care.
