Do We Only Care About Security Costs When Republicans Visit North Dakota?

President Trump has made multiple visits to Fargo this election cycle in support of U.S. Senate candidate Kevin Cramer, and the reaction from incumbent Senator Heidi Heitkamp’s surrogates in the press was to get bent out of shape about the cost of security.

Fargo Mayor Tim Mahoney even requested that Republicans reimburse law enforcement expenses.

Well yesterday former Vice President Joe Biden visited Fargo support Heitkamp’s campaign, and yet we’ve heard nary a peep from the left wing commentators in the state about security costs. That despite there being a not insignificant law enforcement presence at and around Heitkamp’s event.

I don’t begrudge Heitkamp and Biden the security, obviously. I wish we lived in a world where such measures weren’t necessary but, alas, we do not. Security is a necessity, and I’m sure our law enforcement agencies did a great job of balancing prudent measures with efficient use of taxpayer resources.

I’m not even going to inquire about it, because I don’t think it’s important. Politics are the means through which we govern. When high-profile people visit our communities, it’s incumbent upon the taxpayers to cover law enforcement costs.

But I am curious about the ringing silence from our liberal friends, who cared so much about the cost to the taxpayers of President Donald Trump’s visit, but seem to care very little about such costs when it’s their candidate doing the campaigning.

By the way, Senator Cory “Spartacus” Booker is in North Dakota today campaigning for Heitkamp. Are we allowed to be concerned about his security costs, or is that verboten because he and Heitkamp have the right politics?
