Breaking News: The Pope Is Catholic

Ever since making some statements against capitalism that, rightfully I think, angered those of us interested in free markets and individual liberty (after all, free market capitalism has done more to combat poverty than any church ever created by man), the left has held up Pope Francis as a sort of liberal icon.

The anti-capitalists are even calling it the “Francis Revolution.”

But – surprise! – it turns out the Pope is still Catholic, and still holds socially conservative views the left finds abhorrent. Which no-doubt explains this headline from Reuters:

Maybe the Pope’s position on abortion isn’t so much a “nod to conservatives” as it is a nod to well-established Catholic doctrine which holds that abortion is immoral and sinful.

And thus, the left’s new-found love affair with the papacy comes crashing down.

Oh well. It was fun while it lasted.
