At What Point Are We All Just Americans?
MINOT, N.D. — Recently, my colleague, reporter April Baumgarten, wrote on the efforts of academics at three North Dakota colleges to pass a resolution acknowledging that the land those campuses reside on once was home to various Native American tribes.
The schools are the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, North Dakota State University in Fargo and the North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton.
“That practice, even if it is only a ritual formality, it nevertheless, I believe, sets a tone that makes for a more civil society in a land where a settler society lives alongside Indigenous peoples,” NDSU history professor Tom Isern told April.
Would this set that tone, though?
