Post Office Can Handle Mail-in Ballots; Partisan Cranks Saying Otherwise Are Putting You On
MINOT, N.D. — It’s campaign season, so the political class needs talking points to make their constituencies angry.
And they aren’t afraid of contriving one if needed.
One example of this might be Michelle Obama’s claim last night that, under the Trump administration, “children are torn from their families and thrown into cages.” That’s an exaggeration, for one thing, and, cages or not, we should note that Michelle’s husband used them too.
Another example is this folderol about the U.S. Postal Service, including claims it won’t be able to handle the strain of increased voting-by-mail this election season. While President Donald Trump has helped fuel these talking points with some characteristically stupid comments on social media and elsewhere, the truth is the Post Office, despite its failings, is more than capable of handling mail-in ballots.
“The Post Office Is Perfectly Capable of Handling Election Mail,” reads a headline over a letter to the New York Times from a former chairwoman of the U.S. Postal Regulatory Commission.
