Why Can’t You Peasants Be Happy With Your Table Scraps?
MINOT, N.D. — Great River Energy is closing Coal Creek Station, North Dakota’s largest coal-fired power plant, so that the Minnesota-based company can cash in on about $1 billion in wind subsidies.
That decision will cost central North Dakota hundreds of jobs, directly, and perhaps thousands indirectly.
Entire communities around that plant are going to wither.
Schools are going to close.
Businesses will die.
But my colleague, Moorhead-based sports commentator Mike McFeely, can’t figure out why people in central North Dakota might be upset about this turn of events.
After all, Great River’s heavily subsidized switch to wind power will create a couple of dozen new jobs in the region.
Can’t the folks in McLean County and surrounding vicinities be happy with those crumbs?
