Analysis: No Donations to Republicans From NDSU Faculty or Administrators During 2018 Election Cycle
We hear a lot about the need for diversity on America’s campuses. Gender diversity. Racial diversity. Things like that.
What our friends in the higher education industry seem little interested in is diversity of thought. It’s not exactly news that the faculty and administrators on America’s campuses lean left, but it can still be surprising just how far left.
For instance, the folks at Campus Reform did an analysis of political contributions from faculty and administrators at North Dakota State University in Fargo. This analysis was occasioned by the anti-Semitic social media postings from Minnesota Congresswoman Ihlan Omar (who has since kinda sorta apologized for them). Omar is an alumna of NDSU.
What they found was that not a single member of the faculty/administration at NDSU who made a reportable political contribution in the 2018 election cycle gave to a Republican:
According to a Campus Reform analysis, 100 percent of all college administrators and faculty members who donated to political candidates or causes gave a total of $21,415.78 to Democrat politicians or Democrat organizations, such as former North Dakota Senator Heidi Heitkamp’s reelection campaign.
The FEC records reveal there were no donations made to Republican candidates or causes by any NDSU faculty or administrators.
Click through to the article to read about their methodology. Note that this was limited to faculty and administrators. General employees weren’t counted.
These numbers should give us pause. While no reasonable person wants a political litmus test to work at our public universities, we also expect that those universities provide our students with a well rounded academic experience. We expect that complicated topics be covered in a fair and balanced way.
How certain can we be that this is happening when the campus environment is so heavily tilted in one ideological direction?
