Conventional political wisdom is that a President with low approval numbers is a hindrance to his political party. But when it comes to President Donald Trump and North Dakota, I’m not sure anyone actually believes that.

Not only are Democrats in North Dakota treating Trump with kid gloves, but Republicans aren’t shy about backing him either.

“We are behind President Trump and his agenda,” Dane Ferguson, executive director of the North Dakota Republican Party, told me during a radio interview today (listen below).

Ferguson and NDGOP Chairman Kelly Armstrong held a press conference today during which they expressed not only that sentiment, but also accused incumbent Senator Heidi Heitkamp of obstructing said agenda.

During our interview Ferguson said Heitkamp voted to filibuster President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch (though she ultimately voted to confirm him). He also pointed out that she was the deciding vote to keep BLM regulations which are opposed by North Dakota’s oil industry, and that she voted to block Republican efforts to repeal or even reform Obamacare.

“She voted three times against any changes whatsoever,” Ferguson said of that last issue.

But is Heitkamp really a Trump obstructionist? I pointed out for Ferguson that Heitkamp is probably one of the friendliest Democrats in the Senate when it comes to Trump and his policies, and at one point was even flirting with joining Trump’s cabinet.

“She’s good at the game,” Ferguson said, adding that “when it really matters she’s not coming through” and that she’s “lined up with Chuck Schumer.”

Senator Schumer, of course, is the Senate Minority Leader for the Democrats.

“She’s a very nice woman,” Ferguson added. “A nice woman can go to Washington D.C. and make very bad decisions.”

According to Freguson, “North Dakotans are looking for an excuse not to vote for her.”
