Kevin Cramer on Serving in Trump Administration: “I Think It’s Unlikely to Happen”

North Dakota’s at-large Congressman Kevin Cramer raised a lot of eyebrows, and got a lot of attention, back when he became one of the first members of Congress to endorse then-candidate Donald Trump.

Now that Trump has, as unlikely as it may have once seemed, won election to the White House speculation has understandably turned to what role there may be for someone like Cramer in Trump’s administration.

“I think it’s unlikely to happen,” Cramer told me during an interview on my radio show yesterday.

But he didn’t entirely rule it out either. “I’d consider it prayerfully,” he said.

Cramer also said that the Trump administration is likely to end the political standoff over the Dakota Access Pipeline. The Obama administration has held up completion of the pipeline by putting on hold an easement to cross the Lake Oahe reservoir along the Missouri River, which is under the control of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, but Cramer says that will likely change under Trump.

“Anybody with common sense knows you’ve got to issue that Missouri River permit,” Cramer said.

I also asked Cramer, a former executive director of the North Dakota Republican Party, why our state’s Democrats lost so badly on election night. Cramer said North Dakota’s Democrats have “adopted the national Democratic platform.”
