More Cattle Attacked Near #NoDAPL Protests

Over the weekend we got reports of missing and dead cattle near the #NoDAPL protest camps, with the North Dakota Stockmen’s Association offering a reward for information.

Today we get news of more livestock attacked with guns and arrows, apparently:

SIOUX COUNTY—The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office is investigating more reports of cattle that were shot this week near the Dakota Access Pipeline protest camp.

One cow was shot and another cow had two arrows sticking out of its ribcage, said Sioux County Sheriff Frank Landeis.

The animals, discovered Monday, Oct. 17, appeared to had been shot recently and were treated by a veterinarian, Landeis said.

The location is “right next to the protest camp” on the south side of the Cannonball River, Landeis said. However, authorities do not have any information that connects the reports to the protest, Landeis said.

Meanwhile North Dakota’s delegation to Congress – including Senators John Hoeven and Heidi Heitkamp along with Congressman Kevin Cramer – have issued a press release condemning these attacks on livestock and asking the federal government to send more law enforcement resources to help deal with the protest camps.

“When tensions are high, North Dakotans have always been able to count on one another to treat our neighbors, our land, and our livestock with dignity and respect,” Heitkamp said in the release. “That’s what makes the news of unlawful butchering and taking of livestock so appalling. If the Administration is serious about maintaining the peace and sanctity of this land and our communities, it’s absolutely critical that it steps in with the support our local law enforcement needs to keep our ranchers, our tribes, and the protesters protected. For months I’ve been pushing our federal agencies to provide the resources and certainty North Dakotans need, and I’ll keep it up – because no family or business should have to fear for their personal safety or the safety of their property.”
