Matt Evans: Angry About Mass Shootings? Congratulations, You're Racist.
According to ShootingTracker.com*, there have been 375 deaths in 2015 from Mass Shootings. Some of these “mass shootings” had zero actual deaths, so I’m not going to vouch for the criteria of this site. Given that, their number might be too high. But let’s just go with it.
From listening to our President, and from national news, one would surmise that mass shootings is a really, really big problem. These shootings seem to happen about 1-2 times per month, and the President addresses the nation, and the news media cannot discuss anything else for a few days, and the internet explodes with calls for more gun regulations.
As it turns out, most of these shootings are committed by young white men, in suburban areas, with lots of white victims.
Each one of these events is a national tragedy that apparently warrants a Presidential response and a media circus.
Now, as luck would have it, according to dnainfo.com, the number of murders in Chicago so far this year is also 375.
Well, that’s interesting.
Here is what we know about murders in Chicago. The majority of murder victims are black folks. The majority of murderers are black folks.
Some of these Chicago stories are just heartbreaking. One woman had 4 children, and all 4 of her children have been murdered over the years. Preventing that kind of family-line destruction was the plot of Saving Private Ryan, but this woman doesn’t live in WW2, she lives in an American city, one that happens to have one of the most thorough implementations anywhere in the US of the democrats’ fantasy of near-total gun prohibition.
[mks_pullquote align=”right” width=”300″ size=”24″ bg_color=”#ffffff” txt_color=”#000000″]…when a bunch of black people – including children – from his own town are murdered, Obama doesn’t really get all that upset. But when a bunch of suburban white children are killed, well, that’s upsetting! When white America is the victim of gun violence, now it’s time to do something about it![/mks_pullquote]
President Obama helped make Chicago what it is today. His friends still run the place. He has to be aware of this stuff. Why isn’t he talking about it? Why isn’t the national media talking about this?
I can think of two basic explanations.
One, the murders in Chicago simply aren’t “news”. News is something that is, by definition, new. It is interesting. It is unexpected. It is something you need to be told about because you don’t already know.
Perhaps Americans (or the media, or the President) simply expect black folks in Chicago to murder each other. Perhaps news consumers do not, for some reason, expect white people in suburbia to shoot up schools, malls, and movie theaters, and therefore, the latter events are worthy of news hysteria while the former are not.
Alternatively, the President and the national media simply don’t value black lives as much as other lives. That is, when a bunch of black people – including children – from his own town are murdered, Obama doesn’t really get all that upset. But when a bunch of suburban white children are killed, well, that’s upsetting! When white America is the victim of gun violence, now it’s time to do something about it!
If you pay attention to what people, the news, and the President all talk about, one could easily come to either of these conclusions: that nobody much cares about gun violence as long as its only poor blacks getting killed, or, nobody expects much better than a constant cycle of murder from poor black neighborhoods.
Neither possibility is very appetizing.
Neither possibility casts mass-shooting hysterics in a positive light.
Both possibilities mean that the entire conversation is based on horribly racist assumptions.
I know that somebody will say, “just because the media and the President only talk about mass shootings, doesn’t mean they aren’t also upset about violence in urban black neighborhoods. Not everyone has to be equally vocal about all things!!”
Well, sure. That’s true. And these folks may be angry about black on black urban violence also. I hope they are. But why don’t they talk about it? Why isn’t it as big of a deal? Why isn’t black murder a good enough reason to demand action? Why doesn’t the atrocious murder of blacks in Chicago get Obama on TV?
Are these folks racist, or are they simply assuming the American voter or the American news consumer is racist?

By the way, every time there is a white murderer in a white neighborhood, President Obama reminds us that he wants to put in place a bunch of laws that have shown to be wholly ineffective in stopping black murders in black neighborhoods.
Why? Does the think white people are better at following the law? Why does he think draconian gun laws will work better nationally than they work in Chicago?
The history of gun control, by the way, is nearly entirely racist in origin. One of the first anti-gun laws in the US was passed in the deep south to categorically prevent freed blacks from owning or carrying weapons. When that was found unconstitutional, southerners passed the “army and navy” law – a law that said that the only handguns that could be visibly carried were Army or Navy caliber sidearms, which just happened to be expensive, and therefore economically unavailable to blacks (and poor whites).
Later on, outspoken liberal, and gun control advocate Robert Sherrill, wrote: “The Gun Control Act of 1968 was passed not to control guns, but to control blacks.”
Sherill is referring to the provision of GCA68 that banned the import of “Saturday night specials” – affordable handguns. Like the Southerners, the democrats behind GCA68 specifically targeted affordable handguns to create a defacto law that prevented urban blacks from legally acquiring handguns.
(As it turns out, the majority of gun murders are committed then, as now, with large caliber, relatively expensive handguns. But empiricism has never really been an aspect of the left’s gun control delusions.)
Here’s the bottom line. Gun control laws in the US have racist origins and appear to be ineffective. The President’s and the news media’s handling of gun violence in the US is horrifically racist. Trying to push more gun control every time a white person kills a bunch of white people, while completely ignoring the tragic impact of gun violence in our black communities, is also racist. If news stories about gun violence are only news worthy when white people are involved, then those news organizations are racist.
If you are playing the President’s game, you are racist too.

PS: After writing this story, I learned that the creator of ShootingTracker.com is a Reddit user who created the site as part of an anti-gun propaganda effort. That explains why some of the numbers seem funny to me. As I mentioned in the article, even if we take the very high number of mass shooting deaths from this propaganda site at face value, urban gun murders are still a much larger problem in America.
