Democratic candidate John Lewis’ gun rights rating not as he claims

The Second Amendment rarely has been a primary focal point in Montana’s congressional elections, with most candidates typically having positive ratings and voting records on gun rights.
Election 2014 is different.
A campaign advertisement by John Lewis, Montana’s Democratic candidate for the U.S. House of Representative, claims Lewis has received an “A” for his Second Amendment stance from the National Rifle Association — its “highest rating,” as the ad explains.
While the NRA has not given an endorsement in Montana’s race for the U.S. House, the claim of the Lewis campaign invites scrutiny, given that the ‘highest rating” possible is “A+” — the rating held by Montana’s U.S. Senate candidate Steve Daines. Lewis received an “A(q)”, which means the rating is with qualification, based on the candidate’s responses to the NRA’s candidate questionnaire.
