Shared Parenting Measure Endorsed By Actors Kiefer Sutherland, Jason Patric

Measure 6 is the shared parenting measure. It’s backed by people who feel the family law system is biased, and that there should be an initial legal presumption of the fitness of both parents for custody in divorce cases.

The proponents of the measure added some star power to their cause today with actors Jason Patric and Kiefer Sutherland cutting an ad for it.

Measure spokesman Mitchell Sanderson sent me the video which I uploaded to YouTube so I could post about it.

Patric is the founder of Stand Up for Gus, an organization that aims to “reform our broken family court system through creating a bill that establishes equal rights and accountability,” according to their mission statement.

Patric and Sutherland aren’t the only celebrities involved. Actors Mark Wahlberg, Robin Wright, Chris Rock, and others are named as endorsers of the cause.

Currently Measure 6 is facing opposition from a committee of divorce lawyers who think the status quo in family law is just peachy. They argue that Measure 6 will only create more hardship and litigation from families, though it’s hard to believe that lawyers are opposing something which creates more business for them.

It will be interesting to see what these celebrity endorsements do for Measure 6. They add some credibility, no doubt, but with eight measures on the November ballot taking up the public’s attention (not to mention gobbling up advertising space), it may be hard for the Measure 6 supporters to get their message out.
