Grand Rapids Herald-Review - One pair has been at the Smithsonian since 1979, another sold at a Christie’s auction in 2000 for $600,000, another is with a private owner and the fourth pair is now perhaps somewhere over the rainbow.
Someone walked off with a pair of ruby red slippers worn by Judy Garland in the 1939 movie “The Wizard of Oz” sometime Saturday night when they were stolen from the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids.
The theft of the ruby slippers, which are insured for $1 million, was reported to the Grand Rapids Police Department just before 10 a.m. on Sunday morning by an employee of the museum.
Investigating officers observed that a window on an emergency exit door had been broken out and the glass display case that contained the ruby slippers was broken into and the slippers were removed. The incident is being further investigated by Grand Rapids Police Investigator Gene Bennet who said there have been five leads as of Tuesday.
