The plot line is that the aliens had already been here prior to their spaceship arrival. As one human put it, the Visitors were causing disruptions on earth for yearrs: unnecessary wars, economic calamity, faith turned to extremism.

It was then that I realized the Visitors were simply CONSERVATIVES!
