Planning for the elements is key and it does not have to include an ice shelter with accompanying furnace. Dont plan the initial outing in the middle of an Alberta Clipper, and if a cold front does come along on the day of your planned outing, re-evaluate and see if theres another day that will work out in the future.

Keep the youngsters warmth at a premium. No matter if its above freezing or below zero, pack extra socks, gloves and mittens.
