Support for Democratic Congressional candidates hit a new low this week, resulting in a tie between Republicans and Democrats in the latest edition of the Generic Congressional Ballot.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 38% would vote for their district’s Democratic candidate while 38% would choose the Republican.

Support for the Democrats fell two points this week, while support for the GOP candidates fell one point. Last week, the Democrats were ahead by just a 40% to 39% margin.

A month ago, Republicans took a two-point lead over Democrats, their first in several years, but that quickly reversed the following week. For the last three weeks, the Democrats have held modest one to four-point leads over the GOP.

Democrats began the year holding a six- or seven-point lead over the GOP for the first several weeks of 2009. Over the past year, Democratic support has ranged from a low of 38% to a high of 50%.

In that same time period, Republicans have been preferred by 34% to 41% of voters nationwide.
