At Tuesday’s State of the City address by Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, African-American songstress Rene Marie was introduced to sing The Star Spangled Banner.

Instead and without warning, Ms. Marie sang the so-called black national anthem, “Lift Ev’ry Voice And Sing” to a stunned audience.

Afterward, Marie defended her action by saying she wanted to express what it felt like to be a black woman in America.
