Its amazing how whenever a huge disaster occurs, the Democrats are always in a hurry to turn it into a political smear. Today, while thousands of acres burn in California and hundreds of thousands are evacuated out of their homes, some of CA’s elected officials including Barbara Boxer and Lieutenant Governor John Garamendi are not racing to help out their citizens, but rather to blame in the incident on George Bush. Harry Reid got the political agenda machine going yesterday when he felt compelled to utter some global warming propaganda:
“As you know, one reason that we have the fires burning in Southern California is global warming. One reason the Colorado Basin is going dry is because of global warming.”
Boxer and Garamendi kept the politicization of the fire going today. First, Boxer claimed that over half of the National Guard’s equipment was unavailable because it is “in Iraq.” Instead of reaching out to the victims of this disaster, Boxer is just trying to criticize Bush’s support of the war yet again. While Boxer makes these ridiculous claims, everyone who is on the scene of this disaster is praising the federal government for its swift response. Sean Hannity gave a long list of all the supplies, planes, and equipment already brought in by the Guard. I can’t seem to find the list, but it was a very long one, and the bottom line is that the federal response has been incredibly organized and many are calling it the best response they’ve ever seen.
California’s Lieutenant Governor John Garamendi, though, was also quick to prioritize a Bush smear over the needs of his state. The President is scheduled to visit the disaster area, but Garamendi is quick to dismiss it as a “political move”, and even went as far as to say that it will “absolutely” interfere with the efforts to put out the blaze. Remember when Bush didn’t visit the Katrina disaster area right away because he thought it would interfere with the efforts? He got slammed for that too. The Democrats can’t make up their mind - they put up a fight if Bush is set to visit, but if he doesn’t visit, they’re mad as heck.
Instead of politicizing this disaster, these politicians need to put aside their differences and work to help out the victims. Boxer, Garamendi, and Reid should truly be ashamed of themselves for this.
