Not 100% sure how that’s relevant, but it’s interesting that countries like France and Belgium have a higher per capita suicide rate among men [primary recipients of cashing in with a hand gun] with 27 & 31 versus 18 per 100,000 in the US…
What does this say about that statistic?
One public-health study found that suicide and homicide rates in the district dropped after the ban was adopted.
Meaning that other studies didn’t agree? I’m sure there was more than one “public study”. Can you link them?
Hand guns is an example by the way where the media has a political agenda that outweighs any commercial incentive for them to be truthful. Coming home from France today.

It’s no surprise that suicide rates are higher in the socialist countries.

But given that statistic and the fact that suicide rate is so high in countries where you can’t own a hand gun… I would say if anything, this further undermines the idea that handgun promotes violence. That means there are only 25,000 non-suicide related hand-gun deaths (that includes accidental and self defense as well as murder of course).
Consider other sources for mortality are much larger, this argues that this isn’t even a valid Public Concern, in the legal & moralistic concern, and that the Government should just Butt Out.

And whilst we are revisiting this, where is your proof that murder and suicide rates declined after 1976? Justice Dept sings an entirely different tune, as do the actual numbers of murders with firearms in the District. Let’s us hear this lie defended.

There’s also an argument to be made for this study being skewed due to guns being picked for suicide.
I’m not suicidal myself, and haven’t spent a lot of time thinking about what the best way to off myself would be, but maybe guns are just a popular way of doing it.
Meaning that if a lot of people who have made up their minds to commit suicide choose a gun to do it they’d naturally get lumped into the “gun owner who killed himself/herself” category.
What this means is that the gun doesn’t make a person more likely to commit suicide, but rather that those who commit suicide are more likely to choose a gun to do it.
We can conclude from that analysis that banning guns is hardly the way to lower suicide rates. After all, denied a gun, one who is intent on ending their own life will just find another method.
