Catholic Church: Protestants aren’t Christians

Not exactly what Pope Benedict just said, but it’s pretty close.

I’ve always thought that denying communion to fellow Christians in Catholic mass was very wrong. Now Pope Benedict (a guy that I thought was fundamental in a good way) says that Protestant pastors don’t have spiritual authority and that Protestant churches “lack elements considered essential to the Catholic Church”.

Really? Like a bunch of rites in a practically dead language? Isn’t what a church most needs the Holy Spirit?

Protestants and Catholics alike have droves of ‘nominal’ (non-) Christians like I used to be, but with the Evangelical growth among Protestants and the seeming lack of personal knowledge of who God is by practically every Catholic I’ve ever heard a story from, why would the Pope choose now to say something like that?

Final thought: and with the resurgence of fundamental Islam around the world, is it the best time to divide the Body of Christ?
