Words from our ethical superiors.
Was going to post large chunks of this fine article, but JAMA has it blocked to public access. Imagine that.
So, a bit of second hand, from 2 other blogs.
“One strategy to affirm and reinforce the belief that individuals have an obligation to participate in research would be a publicity campaign analogous to get-out-the-vote efforts, which have helped convince 90% of US citizens that there is a duty to vote.” Get that? It is your “duty” to allow experimentation on yourself, for the greater good, of course.
And this gem,“Well-functioning institutional review boards ensure that the risks are not excessive relative to the benefits of research. When the risks are significant, the obligation may be weaker.” is just priceless. IRBs, as RWP so succinctly points out, are there to cover an institution’s ass when they fuck up, nothing more. Put government in charge and watch the death and suffering blossom across the land, with IRBs replaced by DeptHealth employees who have not a clue what the hell they are doing.
Putting Ezekiel Emanuel, his wife, or any of their associates, in charge of anything connected to America’s medical industry is fucking insane. What the hell are people thinking!?!?!
And here, check out all the “input” from Dr Mengele Jr, if you can get access to anything more than the abstracts, that is.
And be sure to checkout Scott’s Stuff-To-Buy! He has a serious cat addiction to feed!!!
