Why I Will Not Vote for John McCain

Doctor Phillip Butler ...highly decorated combat veteran who was awarded two Silver Stars, two Legion of Merits, two Bronze Stars and two Purple Heart medals.

As some of you might know, John McCain is a long-time acquaintance of mine that goes way back to our time together at the U.S. Naval Academy and as Prisoners of War in Vietnam. He is a man I respect and admire in some ways. But there are a number of reasons why I will not vote for him for President of the United States.

…People often ask if I was a Prisoner of War with John McCain. My answer is always “No - John McCain was a POW with me.” The reason is I was there for 8 years and John got there 2 ½ years later, so he was a POW for 5 ½ years. And we have our own seniority system, based on time as a POW. “>...People often ask if I was a Prisoner of War with John McCain. My answer is always “No - John McCain was a POW with me.” The reason is I was there for 8 years and John got there 2 ½ years later, so he was a POW for 5 ½ years. And we have our own seniority system, based on time as a POW.

John’s treatment as a POW:

1) Was he tortured for 5 years? No. He was subjected to torture and maltreatment during his first 2 years, from September of 1967 to September of 1969. After September of 1969 the Vietnamese stopped the torture and gave us increased food and rudimentary health care. Several hundred of us were captured much earlier. I got there April 20, 1965 so my bad treatment period lasted 4 1/2 years. President Ho Chi Minh died on September 9, 1969, and the new regime that replaced him and his policies was more pragmatic. They realized we were worth a lot as bargaining chips if we were alive. And they were right because eventually Americans gave up on the war and agreed to trade our POW’s for their country. A damn good trade in my opinion! But my point here is that John allows the media to make him out to be THE hero POW, which he knows is absolutely not true, to further his political goals.

... can verify that John has an infamous reputation for being a hot head. He has a quick and explosive temper that many have experienced first hand. Folks, quite honestly that is not the finger I want next to that red button.

It is also disappointing to see him take on and support Bush’s war in Iraq, even stating we might be there for another 100 years. For me John represents the entrenched and bankrupt policies of Washington-as-usual. The past 7 years have proven to be disastrous for our country. And I believe John’s views on war, foreign policy, economics, environment, health care, education, national infrastructure and other important areas are much the same as those of the Bush administration.

I’m disappointed to see John represent himself politically in ways that are not accurate. He is not a moderate Republican. On some issues he is a maverick. But his voting record is far to the right. I fear for his nominations to our Supreme Court, and the consequent continuing loss of individual freedoms, especially regarding moral and religious issues. John is not a religious person, but he has taken every opportunity to ally himself with some really obnoxious and crazy fundamentalist ministers lately. I was also disappointed to see him cozy up to Bush because I know he hates that man. He disingenuously and famously put his arm around the guy, even after Bush had intensely disrespected him with lies and slander. So on these and many other instances, I don’t see that John is the “straight talk express” he markets himself to be.

Dr.Butler seems to have some issues..but given his 8+ years in the hands of a brutal captor, who wouldn’t?

His plain resentment of McCain’s life post Vietnam and his stated “hatred” of GWB are grudges that we can’t fully understand. It seems that someone carries a lot of anger around but I don’t think it’s McCain.

Dr. Butler has more than earned the right to feel as he does and say whatever he wants. God bless him and all the men who live with the wounds suffered in the service of their country.

Rbb’s political convictions rest on the premise that he wouldn’t do anything Bush would do… regardless of whether or not it would be he right thing to do.

HG on August 19, 2008 at 02:55 pm

That’s not true.

But bush rarely does the right thing, so I can understand where your prejudice comes from.

RBB,

I hate it when I have to agree with the political left but I do here....to some extent. If you’ll look back I wrote here on this blog well over a year ago that I didn’t think McCain was the man for the job.

Reality, the bitch that she is, however, has put him against a man who is absolutely the most unqualified candidate for the office this country has ever seen. If Barack Obama gets elected and we have a Dem majority in the House and Senate this country will go to hell on a rocket sled.

So...we literally have a “lesser of two evils” issue here.

Sadly, it’s a matter of just how slowly we want to commit suicide.

I suppose he would rather vote for some moron that only been in the Senate for 2 - 3 years that has many questionable political connections. Yeah, that is sooooo much better than McCain.

I will always support the POTUS in his role as Commander in Chief. But will President Obama support US?

He has no record but his rhetoric is all talk with little action other than quick retreat in Iraq.

I can honestly say that the thought hadn’t occurred....

Right up front I can say that I would support him at LEAST as much as the left has supported Bush.

I tend to like the old man McCain, but it is hard to determine why I like him still.  His positions have changed so dramatically through the last year it is hard to tell if he stands on principle or what will get him elected.

I wonder why it is when Obama moves to the right it is because of dishonesty, but when McCain does it is out of making informed decisions?  McCain wasn’t elected on his idea of moving to the right, so why should he change now?

He strikes me as a politician as any.

Truth be told, I would not be terribly upset with a McCain victory, but I think his foreign policy ideas are terrible and his economic plan is God awful.

Why should we the left has done nothing to support Bush. I despise Obama’s Marxist views and I am not excited about appeasement and over taxation and class warfare.

It’s a double-stantdard.  Whenever anyone moves to the right it is dubbed “dishonesty”, but move to the left and you are “informed”.  Nothing new here.

“I am concerned that repeal of the estate tax would provide massive benefits solely to the wealthiest and highest-income taxpayers in the country. A Treasury Department study found that almost no estate tax has been paid by lower- and middle-income taxpayers. But taxes have been paid on the estates of people who were in the highest 20% of the income distribution at the time of their death. It found that 91% of all estate taxes are paid by the estates of people whose annual income exceeded $190,000 around the time of their death.”

John McCain on the Senate floor statement opposing HR 8, a bill to permanently eliminate the death tax, June 11, 2002

“I think we would be making a terrible mistake to go back to the ‘80s, where we cut all of those taxes and all of a sudden now we’ve got a debt that we’ve got to pay on an annual basis that is bigger than the amount that we spend on defense.”

Philip Butler is was he is, which does not make him an expert on matters political. His personal opinion of John McCain is just that: his personal opinion.

Beyond that, I sometimes wonder where the ‘perfect’ conservative candidate is that some on this blog long to see.  Who is he?  Why isn’t he running?

Did republicans and conservatives think that Ronal Reagan was the perfect conservative candidate when he first ran?  Nope. They just saw him as a whole lot better than his opponent, Jimmy Carter.  And so did many democrats.

We on the right have painted this whole election in stark black and white; left against right; conservative against moderate; good against evil. We need to stop polarizing the party and the nation.

Would I ‘support’ Barack Obama if he were president? No more than I support any other president. But, I would continue to respect the office that he holds.

Regan ended up being one of the best presidents of our time. I like him because the left hated him so much…

pparents; To add onto that tought it is about having Marxism shoved down our throats. If BHO was elected with a DNC congress and Senate it would be very bad for this country. A BHO administration would make the would make the former Clinton administration look decent compared to the damage this moron would do with the keys to the white house.  BHO would run this country into the ground at a very high rate of speed, and would be a duplication of the Jimmy Carter administration. BHO must be defeated for the good of this great nation.

You can’t have it both ways, Goon.  You either vote for McCain, you vote for Obama, or you don’t vote.

And if you don’t vote, is that how you plan to defeat Obama?

You can’t have it both ways, Goon.

Why not? Both those things are true.  McCain has made a career out of insulting and betraying conservatives, and now he’s reaping the rewards of that.  If conservatives don’t vote for McCain, it’s the consequence of his own past actions.
Voting for conservative Congress people is the antidote to both Presidential candidates.  Both of them can be neutralized.

Nothing you can say will change the facts about McCain.  He simply isn’t worthy of my vote.  The “settling for less” method has gotten us to the point where someone like McCain is the Republican nominee for President.  I will not participate in that method any more.  It’s time to take a stand, like the House Republicans are on oil development.
