Where Are The Progressive/Feminist Protests?

A few days ago women and girls were openly sexually assaulted on the streets of Cairo.

Punitive gang rapes for perceived moral violations are common.

Women are buried to the waist and stoned to death for adultery. This includes if they are a rape victim.

Women can’t drive. Women can’t vote. In some cases women can’t leave the house without a male escort.

Women must be covered head to toe at all times. To expose any part of the body or face can mean beatings, jail, or even death. A leading cleric justifies the rape of women who aren’t totally covered, calling them, “uncovered meat.”

A man may beat his wife if she needs it as long as he doesn’t get too carried away.

Welcome to the ultra-misogynistic world of Islam. In today’s world the attitude toward women in the Islamic culture is almost surreal. My question is: Where are the protests? Where are the feminist voices howling in protest over the brutal treatment - and make no mistake, it is brutal - of their sisters under the veil? After the well documented women’s struggles of the past century you would think that our enlightened feminists and liberals would be vociferously protesting what’s happening to those women.

Why aren’t they? Where are they?

My answer to that is simple. I don’t know. I can’t figure out why the usually screeching liberals aren’t baying at the moon over this issue. Is it because they may find themselves unwittingly allied with a perceived right wing cause (the war on terror) and they simply cannot have that, no matter what the cost? The two issues are very separate so that shoudn’t be the case.

We’re not shooting terrorists because they’re misogynistic neanderthals. We’re shooting terrorists because they want to shoot us.

Is it because there are just so many other abused women in the world that they just can’t find time, what with all the other protesting they’re doing. Nope. I haven’t seen any other protests concerning women’s rights lately, at least on any kind of medium-to-large scale. The only serious liberal protests I’ve seen have been against religion, ROTC, conservatives, the war in Iraq, Bush, gay rights, and anything else that doesn’t fit the liberal agenda.

Except this. Except that everyday in Islam women are abused on a scale not seen in centuries and nobody is uttering a peep about it. Not one little peep.

I guess maybe if the Islamists were to register as Republicans, then maybe they would get the kind of attention that they deserve for the brutality they mete out.

Until then our liberals and feminists apparently have better things to do.

Comments

Don’t forget the Hindus too. They treat women equally poorly.
Pilgrim. The feminists and the libs are like anyone else. They don’t protest unless its going to make their lives better. Same reason why you are writing this post. If you had genuine concern for these women you would include Hindus and all the other social and religious groups that oppress women… but you are only motovated by 1) the current war on terror and 2) making libs look bad. Both of these serve you nicely. In that way you are just like the feminazis and the liberals.

Sparkley apparently doesn’t get that the current war on terror is a war against oppressive regimes that treat women poorly.

As for women’s groups, I once read somewhere (though I can’t find it now) that an anti-war women’s group donned hijabs and burkas to show their “solidarity” with the poor women of Iraq who were being killed and driven from their homes by U.S. soldiers.

The irony was absolutely fantastic.  I actually posted on it, but now it seems that post got lost in a server move.

Where in my post did you get:

Sparkley apparently doesn’t get that the current war on terror is a war against oppressive regimes that treat women poorly.

I fully understand that. Please show me where there is evidence in my post that I don’t get that. Thanks.

Hindus? You mean the ones who had a female president and who have actresses and models and female members of their Parliament? Those Hindus?

The Hindus who’ve had powerful women leaders throughout history like Lakshmibai and Rani Jeendan? Those same Hindus who actually worship the female goddess Kali?

Once again you don’t know what you’re talking about. Try actually studying history instead of just spouting off uniformed opinions. Women have long held a much higher place in Hindu society than their counterparts in Islamic society.

Both of these serve you nicely. In that way you are just like the feminazis and the liberals.

Why do you continually apologize for the Islamists? You and your ilk will be the first to bend the knee instead of fighting for your way of life. As I said in another post in a paraphrase of a quote from John Donne, Ask not for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for you, stupid.

By the way.....
I don’t have to make the libs look bad. You don’t need my help for that. You make yourselves look bad all on your own.

And, yes, the war on terror does motivate me. It should motivate you but you’re too busy defending homicidal Islamists to critisize them.

I’m talking about the Hindus who encourage wives to jump on their husband’s funeral pires. I’m talking about the Hindus who pour kerosene on women and light them on fire. I’m talking about Hindus. Women light themselves on fire to avoid male anger and oppression. Hindu men, granted, are effeminate, but that doesn’t mean women in Hindu culture aren’t oppressed. Nepotistic female rulers or legislators aside. Learn your history buddy.

Sparkie: You are just doing your usual approach of making things up.  When you don’t know anything on the subject, I guess that’s your only recourse.

And, yes, the war on terror does motivate me.

Its just sad you aren’t really motovated by the oppressed women in these countries. Bummer. Selfish.

Hindus who encourage wives to jump on their husband’s funeral pires.

You’re talking about the tradition of suttee. It has been illegal in India for generations and is only practiced now in extreme cases. Understand this, too....it was considered an honor for the wife to burn in the funeral pyre of her husband. When Britain first banned the practice in the 1800’s women who were prvented from doing so would commit suicide rather than face the shame of not honoring themselves in the fire. Strange to us, but there you are.

Women light themselves on fire to avoid male anger and oppression.

Those incidents were in protest of arranges marriages - a practice not exclusive to India.

Hindu men, granted, are effeminate

You mean like the Sikh and Bengali regiments who fought so valiantly in WW2? You mean like the Lancer regiments that held the frontier for generations?

Read up on this before you post another opinion, Sparkie. You’re WAY off base on this one.

The subject of this thread is the cruelty to women in Islamic countries, and the hypocrisy of our “women’s movement”, that totally fails to address it, because they are really a leftie movement.  The Islamofascists are the new darlings of the lefties, therefore no attention to the horrendous abuses of Islam toward women.
In a pathetic attempt to use a “they do it too” argument, you speak about Hindu culture in an highly inaccurate way.  You lie about Hindu culture, and so smear people to distract from the real abuses of your favorite “victim” group, the Islamics.  In so doing, you make stuff up about Hindu culture, about which you know nothing.

I’m sorry I distracted from your shit propaganda. Carry on.

Just to amplify on Pilgrim’s post: All of India is not Hindu.  There is a very large Muslim population, with their violent treatment of women.  The practice of suttee is very rare, and is voluntary, so it isn’t about any hatred of women.  In other words, you made it all up, and are the real propagandist here, attempting to smear Hindus to distract from your inability to admit the truth about Islam’s violence toward women.

Anyone who has followed American politics for any legnth of time knows that the liberal politics in our country will surely be the demise of America. I know, people will read that and laugh. Call me an alarmist if you will, say anything that will make you feel better. Deny reality if you like.... that wont change a thing. Its sad to say that we as Americans will get what we have coming.... implosion. More and more pseudo intellectuals make comments such as -

Don’t forget the Hindus too. They treat women equally poorly.

Absolutely no basis in fact.... thats what America is becoming.... a group of misinformed pseudo intellectual liberal apologists who hate the very principals this nation was founded on. You could almost call them “traitors”, but I’m sure their redefining that word to mean something less hideous. That might hurt someones feelings.
Anyone who compares the horrific life of a woman under extreme Islamic law to a modern day Hindu woman is either:
1. Very misinformed
2. Telling a lie to support his flawed position.
As far as America’s future is concerned… I see both possibilites as being equally dangerous.

Pilgrim,

Is this the sort of thing you were talking about?

RIYADH: A Saudi court has sentenced a gang rape victim to 90 lashes of the whip because she was alone in a car with a man to whom she was not married.

The sentence was passed at the end of a trial in which the Al Qateef high criminal court convicted four Saudis convicted of the rape, sentencing them to prison terms and a total of 2,230 lashes.

The four, all married, were sentenced respectively to five years and 1,000 lashes, four years and 800 lashes, four years and 350 lashes, and one year and 80 lashes.

A fifth, married, man who was stated to have filmed the rape on his mobile phone still faces investigation.

Two others alleged to have taken part in the rape evaded capture.

Saudi courts take marital status into account in sexual crimes. A male friend of the rape victim was also sentenced to 90 lashes for being alone with her in the car.

The court heard that the victim and her friend were followed by the assailants to their car, kidnapped and taken to a remote farm, where the raping occurred.

The victim was quoted by Okaz newspaper as saying she had expected harsher penalties for the assailants, especially as they had pleaded not guilty.

Or maybe this?

Anecdotes of this brutal process reveal ever more of cruelty. The regime’s authorities usually force the victim’s family members, including children, to watch the stoning to death of their loved one, and in some instances, when the woman miraculously managed to escape, contrary to the regime’s own law, she was recaptured and either stoned again or killed on the spot.

On August 10, 1994, in the city of Arak, a woman was sentenced to death by stoning. According to the ruling of the religious judge, her husband and two children were forced to attend the execution. The woman urged her husband to take the children away, but to no avail. A truck full of stones was brought in to be used during the stoning. In the middle of the stoning, although her eyes had been gouged out, the victim was able to escape from the ditch and started running away, but the regime’s guards recaptured her and shot her to death.

And yet some Americans, women in fact, are known to regard the confrontation between radical Islam and western civilization as not a war, but a “problem” to be solved.

Bat One on November 15, 2006 at 10:29 am

Not similar to Hindus in India at all.

I don’t think he was talking about Saudi Arabia since we coddle them. I don’t really think anyone is doing anything about the problems in Saudi Arabia.

No...I wasn’t specifically talking about Saudi. I was talking about ISLAM!!!!!

Can’t give it up, can you, Sparkie? And, you made my point for me....nobody is doing anything about radical Islam’s brutal treatment of women.

its hard to do given our tacit consent to saudi arabia’s treatment of women and the whole pakistan thing you know? take it up with GW - not the feminazis.

What does any of that have to do with the hypocritical silence of the feminists?  They are free to speak(since they are not in an Islamic country).  Why don’t they stand up for their “principles”?  Maybe they don’t have any; just an anti-American agenda.

Those examples and so many more are exactly what I’m talking about. Where are all the enlightened voices raised in protest. I hear crickets chirping.

All the contributors are anti-pornstitution, radical feminists.

I guess that means they are objective, always tell the whole truth, would never exaggerate statistics, and have no agenda of their own.  Right.

Supergreen,

Again you prove my point. I went to your link and saw not one thing about the brutality of Islamic misogynists against women. You can’t make a case, can you? If so, show it.
