When It Comes To Auto Workers, Suddenly We Find Our Principles

The head of the United Auto Workers union lashed out Friday at Senate Republicans—Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker, in particular—blaming them for scuttling the $14 billion auto bailout package approved earlier in the week by the House.

Congressional republicans - including failed candidate John McCain - who couldn’t wait to vote for the bailout of the Mortgage Industry and the Banks have suddenly discovered their principles and are refusing to bail out the auto industry without major concessions by labor, putting several million worker’s jobs at risk.

Like it or not, this is exactly why we are seen as the party of big business and no friend of the working class.  And, like it or not, this is why we are and will remain a distinctly minority party.

We would have been on firm, principled ground if we had refused to bail out anyone from the get-go.
