What the CIA Had to Destroy

Summary of Article Link:

With the help of Ron Suskind’s book entitled, “ The One percent Doctrine: Deep Inside America’s Pursuit of It’s Enemies Since 9-11,” columnist Nat Hentoff puts a face to those destroyed CIA video tapes. The face is the horrific ordeal of Palestinian Abu Zubaydah who was physically and mentally tortured while in a secret CIA prison after his 2002 capture in Pakististan.

Zubaydah’s torture, euphemistically referred to by the Bush Administration as “alternative” interrogation procedures, included sleep deprivation, exposure to extremely loud music and cold temperature, and denial of needed medication.

So far Attorney General Mukasey has not given the green light to an independent outside special counsel. Instead he turned it over to a career federal prosecutor to report back to him. Many questions need to be answered, like who authorized the torture. So far both leaders of the Democrats, Pelosi and Reid, have been weak in demanding the necessary investigation.

Davinski,

Your nearly mindless animosity toward President Bush and our war against Islamist terrorism is already well known, but I wonder if you’d enlighten the rest of us and detail exactly how you think terrorist murderers such as Abu Zubaydah should be dealt with once captured.

Davinski,

What is it about those of you on the Left that for all your hate-based criticism you cannot provide a detailed, cogent and concise alternative to the policies you find so abhorrent?  Every time you’re asked for specifics you fall back on some smarmy, incoherent platitude instead.

Still, you did acknowledge referentially that Islamist terrorism is evil.  That’s no small accomplishment for a liberal.  Did it hurt much?

R108,

A thoroughly predictable dodge to avoid the humiliation of a detailed discussion of an issue.  Typical!

I answered your question. What part of humanely do you not understand? Let me spell it out in crayons for you: We should treat all prisoners humanely. I believe it is the same position of one-time POW and Republican hawk John McCain.

We should treat all prisoners humanely.

After they have revealed all their information.  What it takes to get them to tell the truth is their choice.  They could simply reveal how they and their co conspirators intend to try to kill us without any coercion; if they don’t, it’s their choice, like I say.
It is our first duty to protect our citizens from their murderous ideology.  We need to be humane to our own citizens first.  Duh.

It sounds like you are on the record that torture is just fine with you. This does not bode well for our troops that become POW’s. Have you ever heard of the word reciprocation. Further, like the article I posted stated, Zubaydah made up lies to avoid more torture. Take it from one who knows. John McCain said that torture , besides being immoral and is against everything our great country stands for, does not wor

Idiot cheesedick!

Have you been paying attention to the videotaped neck-sawings that have been taking place by those taken prisoner by the Muslim extremist types?

Geez!  Let’s not piss these vermin off, they might start treating any hostages… er.. prisoners roughly.

These are vermin. Roaches have more humanity.

Find them.  Squeeze them dry for information and then treat them as armies have treated murderous criminals for hundreds of years… execution.

And best to do so with lots of pig blood to deny them their 72 virgins.

These animals are NOT soldiers and should not be given the treatment reserved for those who fight in uniform and in open combat against other soldiers.

It is bad for the people who actually have to carry out the torture.

It is bad for our standing in the world, which makes it harder to form allies.

But the biggest reason I oppose torture is because it because I have an idealized idea of what the country should be.  I think alot of people have that view and torture doesn’t fit.

Torture should only be used in a total war which we are losing.  At that point you do whatever it takes to survive.  But we are not anywhere near that.

Lestat on January 22, 2008 at 10:39 pm

Have you ever heard of the word reciprocation.

Yes, and we are entitled to do just that when we capture them, but we don’t.  We interrogate them; torture is simply sadistic.  Pity you don’t know the difference.

Typical leftie moral relativism; why not use enhanced interrogation(not torture) to avoid losing?

Davinski,

Your stated concern for the welfare of our military is certainly admirable, although given your consistently adamant leftism, I’m at a loss as to how seriously to take it.  But your argument, in any case, is little more than a pitiful straw man, complete with some terribly tattered suspenders… and no belt.

As a veteran myself, I can assure you that none of our men and women go into combat with no illusions whatsoever how they would be treated if captured.  For you to suggest that our own treatment of captured terrorist fighters will in any way influence how our own captured soldiers or Marines would be treated is self-delusional nonsense on a truly epic scale.  t is also demonstrably dangerous, as any other combat vet will tell you.  John McCain, for example, or Jeremiah Denton.  The four Blackwater security personnel who were beaten, disemboweled, burned, and hung from the bridge at Fallujah also come to mind, as do the headless remains of those several captured US soldiers.  Hell, Daniel Pearl wasn’t even a combatant, but a reporter for the WSJ, a financial daily.  You do remember him, don’t you?

As for Abu Zadayah, his every living breath is an insult to humanity screaming to be avenged.  Had he been frozen solid in a bloc of ice from the waist down it would still have been too good for him… or anyone else who wishes to take our freedom and destroy our society.

Because torture doesn’t help us win.  Our standing in the world important to this war.  It makes it possible for us to form alliances and get help.  Otherwise we end up on a terrorist watchlist from Canada.

Refusing one of needed medication is not torture? Waterboarding is not torture? Not like you to wimp out on an argument.

Water boarding was designated as illegal by U.S. generals in Vietnam 40 years ago. A photograph that appeared in The Washington Post of a U.S. soldier involved in water boarding a North Vietnamese prisoner in 1968 led to that soldier’s severe punishment. Earlier in 1901, the United States had taken a similar stand against water boarding during the Spanish-American War when an Army major was sentenced to 10 years of hard labor for water boarding an insurgent in the Philippines.

Waterboarding is morally reprehensible and should in no way ever be used on a human being.  John McCain.

Davinski,

John McCain, quite understandably, is wrong.  And we can only hope that, should he become president, he will overlook his horrific personal experiences and instead come down on the side of his sworn duty to protect the nation and its people.  If it was known or suspected that a terrorist organization was attempting to smuggle a nuke or a biological weapon into the US, for example, there ought to be ABSOLUTELY NO LIMIT WHATSOEVER as to what we would do to prevent the catastrophe.

Refusing one of needed medication is not torture? Waterboarding is not torture?

No. It’s really a matter of them choosing to undergo such treatment, when they could simply reveal the information they have.  Their choice.

Your blatant disregard of basic human rights is an insult to the ideals that made this country great.

Your hate and fear is cowardly.

Courage is grace under pressure.
