Vatican: Pollution is Sin

Summary of Article:

With the world changing due to globalization, The Vatican believes there are “new sins“confronting Catholics, one of which is pollution. The Vatican is telling followers that sin is not just an individual act but can also be a transgression against the larger community, such as destroying the environment.

Senior Vatican official Msgr. Gianfranco Girotti said, “If yesterday sin had a rather individualistic dimension, today it has an impact and resonance that is above all social, because of the great phenomenon of globalization. In effect, attention to sin is a more urgent task today, precisely because its consequences are more abundant and more destructive.”

Other denominations have taken up the cause, too. The Southern Baptist Convention this month announced plans to fight global warming, and the California diocese of the Episcopal Church recently appointed its first canon for environmental ministry.

Strange how some individuals and groups with strong religious convictions denounce science which has at its root rigorously applied scientific methods because it conflicts with their ideology.

Then counter with total acceptance of theory which was neatly plucked out of the air by activists promoting an agenda conforming to their beliefs.

The Vatican’s position against pollution seems pretty common sensible to me. I know that global warming has its advocates and its critics but I didn’t realise that good old fashioned pollution was controversial.

"There are different kinds of truths for different kinds of people. There are truths appropriate for children; truths that are appropriate for students; truths that are appropriate for educated adults; and truths that are appropriate for highly educated adults, and the notion that there should be one set of truths available to everyone is a modern democratic fallacy. It doesn’t work.”

Mike,

I doubt that it is in most circles.

But environmentalists seem to group anything they object to into the general category of “pollutants”.

Still the contradiction by the Episcopal Church and others as well, with regard to the role science plays is somewhat troublesome.
