US Refuses ‘Any Wounded Soldier’ Mail

Associated Press

Mail must be addressed to a specific member of the armed forces - a rule that pains some well-meaning Americans this Christmas season.

Hundreds of thousands of holiday cards and letters thanking wounded American troops for their sacrifice and wishing them well never reach their destination. They are returned to sender or thrown away unopened.

Since the Sept. 11 attacks and the anthrax scare, the Pentagon and the Postal Service have refused to deliver mail addressed simply to “Any Wounded Soldier” for fear terrorists or opponents of the war might send toxic substances or demoralizing messages.

I wish I had known that people were still doing this, I would have put a readerblog post up about it, and spread the word other places. It is hard to get specific names of troops in order to send mail, and there needs to be a better system in place to let people send mail and packages to individual troops. The privacy issue makes it a bit sticky, you just can’t post lists of troops names and where they are. Too many wackjobs such as codepink and other demented Democrat groups would bombard them with all kinds of crap.

Contacting your local American Legion and VFW posts is one way, and donating to USO and Red Cross also work.People could also contact Public Relations Liaison offices at military posts to learn how to send Christmas cards and packages to troops.

Hell, Anna, now that you have pointed this out I feel like a real piece of crap for not thinking of it. Guess we’ll have to get the word out to the Milblogs and see what can be done in the little time that is left.
