US Gov’t to Battle-injured Troops: Pay Us

Original here.

Nine hundred “battle-injured soldiers” who served in Iraq and Afghanistan officially owe the government $1.2 million. But many can’t afford to settle the debts and the government’s efforts to collect the money have “placed significant hardship” on some of the veterans, the Government Accountability Office reported today.

ABC News, which also got hold of the report in advance, told the tale of Army specialist Tyson Johnson. Seriously injured by a mortar blast, “his injuries forced him out of the military,” ABC reported, “and the Army demanded he repay an enlistment bonus of $2,700 because he’d only served two-thirds of his three-year tour. When he couldn’t pay, Johnson’s account was turned over to bill collectors. He ended up living out of his car when the Army reported him to credit agencies as having bad debts, making it impossible for him to rent an apartment.”

GAO recommends that Congress give the Pentagon more authority to forgive soldiers’ debts.

Jeez.

I would suggest some of these troops are probably big ole deadbeat losers. ABC probably found the only terjerker in the whole bunch eh?

That would make me kinda like John Kerry?

This problem will only get worse as the Bush regime cuts veterans benefits.

Being a medic in the Army, I see soldiers who will do anything to get out of PT or duties (Also known a malingering).  Most of these will constantly go to ‘sick call’.  Once there, they feign injury to get a profile which restricts what kind of physical activities they can do.  We call these soldiers ‘Sick Call Rangers’.  The worst of the lot are known as ‘Broke Dicks’.

As medics, we have been told to expect that as many as 60% of those soldiers coming to see us are malingering.

In the above case, it could be that the soldiers are malingering.  They could finish out their term of service, but use their illness as an excuse to avoid that duty.  Most injured soldiers, will work behind a desk until they finish their term.

They sign a contract.  Nuff’ said.

Oh, and Don… As a medic, who works at a VA hospital, your wrong.  The 1960’s and 1970’s are OVER.

If you read the main article, you will notice that over the past 6 years, VA medical benefits have risen by 83%.  The 10% cut will still mean a net increase in benefits.  Also what was mentiond in the article, but is conveniently ingnored by the Bush haters, is that Congress can approve emergency funding for the VA, as they have, several times in he last few years.

Lets see if the Democrats approve emergency funding to cover any shortfalls in the budget when it comes to veterans.  My bet, is that they will not approve emergency funding, and sacrafice the Veterans as political fodder so they can bludgeon Bush over the head.

...that Congress can approve emergency funding for the VA, as they have, several times in he last few years.

So you expect Congress to clean up after the President.

I accept that you know more about this than I do---and thank you for your service---but how do you reconcile the idea of cutting future benefits to raise present levels of care?

Being dunned for sign up money because of
disabling injury incurred on the job, some contract.
Heartless and despicable.
“Support the troops , screw the disabled.”
We owe them , not they owe us.

Not nuff said.

An increase = “a cut”. I guess black would be white there.

So you expect Congress to clean up after the President.

Congress sets the spending, so it’s ultimately in their hands.

If you want to “clean up” that, you’ve got to change the Constitution.

So you expect Congress to clean up after the President.

So for you, it is OK for the new Congress to sacrafice the Veterans because it will score well for them politically.  That is pathetic.  They should support our veterans regardless of whether it is perceived as ‘cleaning up for the president’.  Sometimes, you have to do what is right, regardless of the political ramifications.

But then again, Democrats care more about political power than they do about the troops, or anyone else for that matter.

Reup bonus is payed on the condition you will serve a specific percentage of the term you sign for. You are discharged early do to combat injuries you should not be forced to repay the bonus. You get discharged early do to self-inflicted, non-service related injuries you should pay it back.

Want to know what getting fucked is, deal with DoD Finance Div. They will give you a masters degree in being screwed.

This Spec Johnson appears to be getting screwed in grand style, and anyone in this position can go to the Inspector General of their branch of service and get help. Personnel and Finance often do not explain to troops they have this option, it saves them having to do all the extra paperwork and appear to be performing poorly to their superiors.

As a verteran I agree with that statement.

Don has fallen victim to the standard liberal way of accounting.  If they propose a 10% increase in some budget, but only get a 5% increase, they consider that to be a cut.
