U.S. bankruptcies soared 38 percent in 2007: government

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Bankruptcy filings by American consumers and businesses soared 38 percent in 2007 to a total of 850,912, the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts said on Tuesday.

Some legal experts have said they expect an even steeper rise in 2008 bankruptcies because of the subprime mortgage crisis that is forcing growing numbers of homeowners into foreclosure.

In 2006, there were 617,660 bankruptcy filings, according to the agency that compiles data from federal courts across the United States.

The vast majority of the 2007 filings—822,590 of them—involved individuals. However, business bankruptcy cases also rose, jumping 44 percent to 28,322 filings, the court office said.

A spokeswoman for the administrative office declined to comment on the rise in filings.

Rbb, why don’t you tell us how gov’t is responsible for these bankruptcies and how democrats have new taxes to correct it?  If you’re going to gloat over bad economic news you ought to at least tell us how a democrat President is going to fix it.

Does anyone else think that the democrats have nothing positive to offer except more promises to solve the ills of a free society?  When was the last time a democrat heralded a course which didn’t require gov’t intervention but inspired and encouraged Americans to take control of our own economic conditions?

Yeah, I know, but wouldn’t it be nice…

HG: It’s like his post on water shortages. I guess Bush is responsible for those as well!

Yeah Proof, it is pretty sad that the only thing that inspires folks like RBB is bad news.  When was the last time you saw Rbb excited about America?

Typical left wing liberal.

Rescinded the new gop bankruptcy law, oversight/regulation of the loan industry.

Please tell us which if any recent gop president did not run up the debt, increase our deficit, raise the debt ceiling and oversee a recession of one degree or another.

Excuse me, you were saying?

Only 8 of the last 28 years has seen a democrat President so it is fair to say that all of them have failed to adequately reign in spending.  In large part due to beligerent democrats whose votes blocked spending reductions and caps.

Bush had a Republican Congress.  When did he propose spending reductions and caps?
