This Year No Republican Can Win the White House… Except…
Curl argues two main thesis:
McCain’s very image as a ‘maverick’ republican with less than perfect conservative credentials - seen as a man who crosses the aisle - may well appeal to large numbers of independents and unhappy democrats.
Senator John McCain’s reputation as a ‘maverick’ who regularly bucks the conservative wing of his party will be a formidable obstacle for Sen. Barack Obama as he seeks to convince moderates to vote for him in November.
McCain’s real record as a solid republican and a senator with a fairly strong conservative record remains largely unknown to to voters of every stripe.
Although conservatives bristle about Mr. McCain’s proclivity to cross party lines and vote with democrats, a glance at his voting record over 25 years in the senate portrays a solid republican. For instance, he voted for every item on the republican’s Contract With America… [more]
And this,
The senator from Arizona, a staunch pro-lifer, has an American Conservative Union rating of 82, not a top-rated conservative, but certainly a solid member. As Mr. Obama regularly points out, Mr. McCain voted in line with President Bush’s wishes 95% of the time in 2007 and 100% so far this year.
All of this might be idle election year speculation or republican wishful thinking except that yesterday the left-leaning AOL daily political poll ran an article suggesting that Barack Obama might win with a ‘historic’ margin not seen since FDR vs Hoover.
But when readers were asked to say who they would vote for in November, McCain won by 54% to 46% over Obama.
And when readers responded to the second question, who do you think will win in November?, it was McCain again by the same margin!
So far today, a similar poll is showing the same results!
After last week’s horrendous Guantanamo ruling by the Supreme Court, any thoughful American will have to think twice before hoping that John McCain loses this race.
