The Second Time As Farce

“In retrospect it is apparent that I was subconsciously looking for a way to justify my faith in the leader of my country and my party, a man who was undergoing a violent attack from the news media, which I thought had never given him fair treatment in the past,” Thompson wrote.

I’m not sure what your point is Mike.  That Thompson tried to look for good in his leader is hardly an indictment of him.  If he tried to convince himself of that good despite evidence to the contrary we’d have a problem.

But ultimately Thompson was instrumental in putting Nixon away.

At this point, it might be well to remember that it was the Republicans who ultimately convinced Richard Nixon to resign in disgrace, saving the country the trauma of his removal from office.

Of course those whose primary concern is the partisan smell of fresh blood in the public waters, rather than what is ultimately best for the nation, will no doubt continue to be outraged at having their formerly favorite target taken from them.  But such small and petty minds are hardly worthy of any serious attention in the first place.

...sounds like illegal tampering to me. I’d like to see a no holds barred race between this guy and hilldog! Rove would ‘commit suicide in the park’ a couple days into that one!

Dick was destroying the party, he wanted to fight on. His Vice President, Spiro Agnew, had resigned earlier and was convicted of bribery. The sooner Dick left the better.

saving the country the trauma

Of having it’s President whimpering at trial in the Senate.
A good part of the country would have happily strung him up like Mussolini.

A good part of the country would have happily strung him up like Mussolini.

A vividly colorful example of why this country was never meant to be a democracy.  Thank you!
