The Best Republican Presidential Candidates Ever

As I have posted in comments before, I believe that any Republican presidential candidate is better than all of the Democratic candidates.  Many have griped that none of them are conservative enough and that may keep them away from the polls or cause them to vote for a 3rd party candidate.  However, as Jack Cashill writes in Thanks for the best GOP line-up ever, the current front runners are a better selection than in years pasts.

Cashill writes:

I am weary, Lord, of all the complaining and caterwauling, all the cranky e-mails that tell me Fred is too lazy and Rudy is too sleazy and John is too wily and Mitt is too wobbly and Mike is too cagey and Ron is too crazy and Duncan is too dreary and Tom is too Johnny-one-note.

And none of these Republicans, by some calculus or another, is conservative enough or charismatic enough, and all of them, alas, will come a cropper in the face of just about any Democrat not named Chris Dodd.

And this, Lord, is what I hear from my right-wing friends. I ask You, have they drunk so deeply of the mainstream Kool Aid that they lost their minds or at the very least their memories?

Do they not understand that this is best crop of candidates any party has put up in years, possibly ever?

Cashill then goes on to review the candidates from years past, the review being too length to post here.

Cashill then concludes with:

So thank you, Lord, for this and so very much more, especially for Hillary. Come Election Day, she will remind us all why, regardless of what we are, we are not Democrats.

Read the whole thing.

The ‘ever’ proposition is easily rebutted - Reagan! None of these people approach him in charisma, ability to deliver a message, core value and vision for America. That by the way is the crux of the problem, without a vision a people perish, and I do not hear a clear vision for America from any of them.

If comparing these men to Hillary or god forbid Obama, it is a no brainer to vote for whoever gets nominated by the party; but, I cannot think of one of them yet that has created any enthusiasm wherein people are excited to vote and help get out the vote. I am sorry Cashill and DocDave these guys are Lilliputians compared to a Reagan and not one of them has articulated a vision or exhibited much energy.

neiman, it was not my intention nor I believe Cashills to claim that any of the Republican candidates were up to Reagans standard.  His point is that he believes that the quality and number of candidates is greater than in previous years.

I think it’s interesting to note that before he was elected, many (including myself) had doubts of Reagans ability to run the country.  A interesting question for the presidency is whether the man makes the job or the job makes the man.

You don’t have to be a moron to be a liberal Democrat but it sure helps.

DocDave: He was my governor for eight years, so I hade no such doubts. He had extraordinary gifts that made him in my estimation one of the top four Presidents in our histiory: Washington - the man who wouldn’t be king; Lincoln - who made the Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights available to everyone and held the Union together during the Civil War by his core values and the strength of his will; FDR - Despite his liberal tendencies and Court Packing scheme, he did lead us out of the Great Depression and through most of WW-II; and Reagan - who won the cold war without firing a shot by the strength of his will, his core values and resolve. For a short time I started to worry when Reagan held on to Stars Wars in Iceland, I listened to the damnable MSM, when Gorbachev buckled; but he made me a conservative and anything less than his brand of conservatism is less than this nation deserves.

Among the current crowd, right now they all lack the stature of Reagan, maybe after they get into office they’ll grow, who knows? But, I do not think our side will win unless we have a candidate willing and able to spell out a clear vision for America and has the oratorical skills to bring the people along with him on that journey. As of this date I have not heard that vision from anyone, none of them excite me very much and more than anyone else I am disappointed in Fred Thompson, and I think it is because he has not demonstrated the fire in the belly and willingness to take the fight to his competitors.
