Sperm donor ordered to support lesbian couple’s 18-year old son

Sigh… more “re-inventing the family"…

The Nassau County man donated his sperm to a work colleague, and included his name on the child’s birth certificate, saying it would give the boy an identity, courts documents revealed.
...
But the man’s goodwill backfired: A court ruling says he is now liable for financial support of the 18-year-old, who lives with his mother in Oregon.
...
Nassau County Family Court judge Ellen Greenberg ruled Nov. 16 against a paternity test, saying it would have a traumatic effect on the child.

Lesbians.  What are ya gonna do?

OK, this is obviously BS in that a sperm donor shouldn’t be stuck with the expenses.

Even given that though, why in the world does he have to support an 18 year old.

Hey kid, get out of the basement and get a job.

Not that I don’t appreciate all of the help my family’s given me over the years.  wink

I agree! However, said sperm donor shouldn’t be dumb enough to put his name on the birth certificate! That implies some kind of relationship.

No good deed goes unpunished.

Isn’t there some type of statute of limitation for requesting such a thing? big surprise
She hasn’t wanted support for almost 20 years and all of a sudden this donor now has a 20 year old debt hanging over his head. UNBELIEVABLE!!!

There have been absent sperm donors since God made the sexes.  This is just a techie twist to an old story.

Isn’t there some type of statute of limitation for requesting such a thing?

Nope, because the issue here isn’t breach of contract or some other claim between the man and the mother.  The right is by the kid to have parental support.  The guy’s a bio parent, so there ya go.  The guy and the woman may have signed an agreement, but in the eyes of the law they can no more contract to limit the rights of the kid than any two contracting parties can limit the rights of a third party that isn’t privy to the contract.

Except it happens every day, with lesbians who contract away the rights and responsibilities of the father—sorry, “sperm donor”— not to mention the rights of the kid to have a dad of his own in the first place.

All because mommy thinks boys are “yucky”.

I walked into a bar, see this babe, walk over and say “hey, how ya doin’”.  She says she’s a Lesbian.  So I ask her “so, how are things in Beirut”?

I suspect it’s about back support.

I heard from a guy once who found out one day that a former college girlfriend had had his kid 8 years previously.  She had decided originally never to tell him, but fell on hard financial time so decided to whack him with child support.

First time he ever learned he had a kid was when child support enforcement notified him.  He eventually got hit with a $30,000+ bill in back payments.

Because, you know, it was his fault that he hadn’t been paying all those years.

Certainly that’s also wrong in that you can’t go back and make up for things the kid didn’t have when he didn’t have a father.

So what happens to the money.  Does the mother get it because because she footed out all of the money up till now?  How does that help the kid.

And how does a lump sum payment to the kid make for any justice?

Whistler,

Funny you should ask that question.  From Saturday’s NYT:

MILWAUKEE — The collection of child support from absent fathers is failing to help many of the poorest families, in part because the government uses fathers’ payments largely to recoup welfare costs rather than passing on the money to mothers and children.

Close to half the states pass along none of collected child support to families on welfare, while most others pay only $50 a month to a custodial parent, usually the mother, even though the father may be paying hundreds of dollars each month.

Critics say using child support to repay welfare costs harms children instead of helping them, contradicting the national goal of strengthening families, and is a flaw in the generally lauded national campaign to increase collections…

Barry A. Miller, the chief of the North Carolina child support office, said North Carolina, like about half of all states, passed no support money on to families. “We were seriously considering a change, but it’s doubtful we could do that now,” said Mr. Miller, who is also the president of the National Council of Child Support Directors. In North Carolina and elsewhere, lost federal aid may instead force cuts in personnel and enforcement.

And these are the bureaucratic dolts that Hillary, John Edwards, and the Democrats want to see put in charge of our health care???

How do I figure?  I could give you hundreds of examples, but this one is as enlightening as most:
