‘Speak English’ ~ God Bless America & Mr Vento

‘Speak English’ Signs OK at Philly Shop

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -The owner of a famous cheesesteak shop did not discriminate when he posted signs asking customers to speak English, a city panel ruled Wednesday.
In a 2-1 vote, a Commission on Human Relations panel found that two signs at Geno’s Steaks telling customers, “This is America: WHEN ORDERING ‘PLEASE SPEAK ENGLISH,’” do not violate the city’s Fair Practices Ordinance.

Shop owner Joe Vento has said he posted the signs in October 2005 because of concerns over immigration reform and an increasing number of people in the area who could not order in English.

Vento has said he never refused service to anyone because they couldn’t speak English. But critics argued that the signs discourage customers of certain backgrounds from eating at the shop.

Commissioners Roxanne E. Covington and Burt Siegel voted to dismiss the complaint, finding that the sign does not communicate that business will be “refused, withheld or denied.”

In a dissenting opinion, Commissioner Joseph J. Centeno said he thought the signs did discourage some customers.

“The sign appeared immediately above another sign that had the following words: ‘Management Reserves the Right to Refuse Service,’” Centeno wrote.

Vento had threatened to go to court if he lost. His attorney, Albert G. Weiss, said he was “pleasantly surprised” by Wednesday’s decision.

“We expected that this was not going to go our way,” Weiss said.

In February 2007, the commission found probable cause against Geno’s for discrimination, alleging that the policy discourages customers of certain backgrounds from eating there.

The case went to a public hearing, where an attorney for the commission argued that the sign was about intimidation, not political speech. The matter then went to the three-member panel for a ruling.

W. Nick Taliaferro, the commission’s executive director, said he would not appeal.

At last sanity has taken a great leap in our politically correct battle. Bravo to Mr Vento and the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations. If customers can read the
sign, then it is implied that they understand English and should be able to speak it, right!? Somebody needs to boot Joseph Centeno off the panel, though. This is liberalism to the extreme. Hopefully, more cities will find the courage to make these sane, though controversial, decisions.

Politically correct bullshit aside, some idiots need to be discouraged from attempting to eat a real Philly cheesesteak.

When you guys go to France, Italy, Japan, Korea etc… do you order in their language or do you expect them to make accomodations if they take your money?

Hawk, when I go out of the country, I usually bring an English-(German, French, etc.) dictionary.  They make them phonetic so any dipshit can use them.

I would suppose the accomodation I would expect from someone taking my money would be, gee, I don’t know, maybe the food I ordered.

So if you were in a resteraunt in Thailand you would be able to immediately be able to order a complex meal from the server.

I doubt it.  What you would do would point to the picture they generally have and say the thai word for please.

But I applaud you for making the effort.

So, Hawk… exactly how many different languages are you suggesting a Philly cheesesteak joint should print their enormous menu in, anyway?

By the way, how DO you say “Philly cheesesteak” in French… or German… or Japanese… or Thai?

I am not suggesting the print in any more languages.  Where in the article does it ever suggest he should?  I am saying that if somebody wants to give you money for your service you should accept the order any way they can convey it.  If it requires pointing and sign language so be it.

Hawk:  I live a few miles away from GINO’S, Joey Vento’s shop. No one was ever denied service there, in spite of the sign.

However his business has gone through the roof since the HRC dust-up. He has had to hire extra help!

I wish more businesses required their customers speak English. Rob could afford to lose the weight.

Rob could afford to lose the weight.

Hey, if you’re going to make a fat joke, at least make some sense ok?

Like “I wish more businesses would deny fat people service, Rob could afford to lose the weight.”

See?  Now that made sense.

By the way, I’m on the second week of my diet right now.  I’ve lost about a pound and a half, but I have started the exercise regiment yet just the “eating better” part.

Thanks for your concern.

Todd could lose twenty pounds of ugly fat if he’d just cut off his head!
