I wonder which former Soviet-controlled area will be next?

Let’s see, which is it, independence or seizure?

Argentina claimed the Falklands as a breakaway province, although theirs was a very weak claim;

Iraq claims Kuwait (which happened to be small, weak and oil-rich) was a breakaway province, and attacked;

Russia claims to be helping the South Ossetians and Abkazians, and yet it is no claim of independence when its true aim is to seize them as its own territory, and coincidentally, the areas seized control strategic mountain passes and warm water ports.

The Russians (Soviets) seized these areas because they wanted them, they were capable of taking them and they think that noone has the stones to oppose them.  That is it in a nutshell.

Unless the West and the World for that matter, presents a united front in opposition to such a revived Stalinist mindset, we can only expect more of the same in the near future.  Look to the areas controlling warm-water ports in the Southwestern parts of Russia—Ukraine and particularly the port of Sevastapol.  Also watch out for GRU of Speznatz type operations against Poland, particularly if Bush goes through with stationing defensive missiles there.
