Ski Dubai ?!?

120°F outside? Stuck in the middle of the desert in Dubai? Wanna go skiing? No problem:

Note the palm trees, dwarfed in the foreground.

I saw an article on this when it first started construction. That snow you see? Reclaimed water. I hope Joel sees this, he’ll love it!(I know y’all don’t see eye to eye, mainly cause y’all are too much alike)

It is a part of Dubai’s modernisation drive. They are also building an island city that is quite the engineering marvel. And a container ship facility that is going to be bigger than any in the region. Oil money going to a good purpose.

They are close on China’s heels in the counterfeiting racket. They are #1 for counterfeit car parts in the world. No one mentioned that when that ‘port deal’ thing was going on. Bill Gates and Dr. Dre might have been a bit uppity about the copyright problems synonymous with Dubai.

And on the ski hill: Its dinky, but cool. I would’ve built a steeper, dangerous slope with trees and cliffs. Goddamn liability. Looks like only about 300’ of vert to me. Yo-yo skiing.

Depending on how mechanically successful this one is there are plans to build a substantially larger one. There is quite a bit of interest in this facility, not just in the Mid-East.

As for the auto parts knock offs, as long as they are higher quality than factory authorised, fug it. After market parts are a huge money maker.

Apparently there’s a few more of these than I thought:

They keep that thing 18-28 degrees F at all times. Its the biggest fridge I’ve ever seen. That must take some juice when its 120deg F outside. A nice place for a kegger!

Cutting intellect bro. Wow.

If it weren’t for the ski hill, it would probably still be 35 cents a gallon eh?

Hey, Sparkie, resize the pics.  They are blowing the site up.

Hey, Sparkie, resize the pics.  They are blowing the site up.

What are you talking about Justin? All of the pics are around 50KB. That’s a good size.

What browser are you using, Justin?  Sometimes the auto re-size feature doesn’t work in all browsers…

IE 6.

It is pushing the left column ads down to the bottom of the page because the pics are too wide to fit within the middle section of content.  That is doubling the length of the page and shifting the contents of the other posts on the main page.

I believe that the content column is set for around 500-600 pixels and the images are 660 wide.  Not sure if a 640x480 will fit sideways without blowing things up, but I would do an image attribute tag to resize them down to 500 pixels wide.  Not really about file size, but it makes the site inconsistent and pushes the pajamas media ads down.

Is it just me that is seeing this?  Go from the main site to the reader blogs and notice the layout differences.

I see the pics.  It is just what it does to the rest of the site.
