Should Don Imus Apologize?

For calling the Rutgers Womens Basketball team a bunch of “nappy-headed ho’s”?

You decide.

Imus is an idiot.  He was an idiot before this bit of idiocy and he’ll be an idiot if and when this incident is forgotten.

What’s going to happen to US industry when the global warming extremists like John McCain double the price of electricity?  I would think all these factories will close and set up in countries where they aren’t scared of technology.

Yes, but its similar to that Iranian guy. People react and create some false empowerment. Rush was pretty good on the Imus thing today.

Imus should apologize. BUT that doesn’t mean he should be fired. Al Sharrpton is an idiot. BUT that shouldn’t mean he should get fired…

Zsa Zsa on April 10, 2007 at 05:51 pm

Al Sharpton is a racist who knew Tawana Brawley was lying.  He kept up the charade for decades, then lost in court.  He has never, to my knowledge appologized to the millions of people he slandered.

People shouldn’t listen the idiot, but I don’t know that he should be fired if his ratings stay up there.

Imus has already apologized. He did this before Rev. Al Sharpton and the world.  Did either good Christian man, Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson, forgive Imus, or did they demand retribution?  Al wants a pound of flesh in exchange for no harm inflicted from the statement made by the bonehead, Imus.  I am disheartened Imus did not tell the “Rev” Al Sharpton that Al should first insist the African-American community refrain from using the same, or worse, terms Imus also used, or Al was a hypocrite.  Imus is toast, anyway.  He may as well speak his mind.  Is Sharptons’ indignation only one-sided?  Wait, don’t answer that.  I think we all know.  The right “reverend” should know Jesus told the Pharisees to remove the mote, or log, from their own eye before looking for the speck in other peoples’ eyes.  If Imus is not allowed to use the same terms 50-cent, ice-tea and whomever are allowed to, without the Al Sharptons and Jesse Jacksons of the world protesting, then they are doing the protesting from prejudice and should be called on it.  I think Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are the worst bigots and racists immaginable.  They only pursue certain races.

twoplanker on April 10, 2007 at 06:43 pm

Imus’ crime was being a white man.  Had a black man, a black woman, or even a white woman(except Ann Coulter, of course) said the same thing, no one would have noticed.  This is so obviously an example of white men having fewer free speech rights than the “favored groups” of the left.  Imus should have the same right to say foolish things as anyone else.  Having said that, Imus made another offensive remark just before the “nappy-headed hos” crack; he essentially called the whole team a bunch of bulldykes, but no one has gotten “offended” at that one, so we know the PC priorities now.
Imus is a Bush-slapping fool, but he should have an equal right to say what he thinks.

robert108.  Good catch.  Did any of the “BB players” defend the bulldyke remark?  It could be true.  This country has just about lost the First Amendment.

Did you guys even click on the link and look at the pictures of the team????

FWIW, I can’t stand Imus—crusty old ignorant bastard.

But I know a nappy-ho when i see one....

Marty: I did look at the photo gallery, and have to disagree with Imus on both counts.  Nappy hair is one thing(I happen to like it), but they don’t appear to be either whores or bulldykes, so I guess Imus is just another hyperbolic loudmouthed bully who got slapped, and now he’s whining like a bitch.  Kinda familiar…

Still, it’s not a crime to be stupid.  Let’s see if his leftie base deserts him for this “racism”.

robert108 - Having said that, Imus made another offensive remark just before the “nappy-headed hos” crack; he essentially called the whole team a bunch of bulldykes, but no one has gotten “offended” at that one, so we know the PC priorities now.

That doesn’t make sense. Most bulldykes aren’t hos. In contrast to the normally slutty gay men, bulldykes and most lesbians for that matter, are usually monogamous creatures.

That’s my observation at least.

Anyways, who cares what Al Sharpton thinks of this matter? I’ll never understand why society pays so much attention to such a foolish man. To ignore the man is to rob him of his power to have his inane comments broadcast to the world as if he were important.

likwidshoe on April 10, 2007 at 09:05 pm

The Left can devour their young if the offenders are white, straight males, who are admitted to Leftist ranks on probation.

Not too long ago, a liberal University president let slip an un-PC remark concerning women, and despite his most heartfelt apologies and groveling, was handed his own head by the Feminazis.

Not really of any political persuasion AFAIK, pro golfer Fuzzy Zeller let slip a comment about the rapidly rising Tiger Woods and, once again, in spite of heartfelt and abject apologies, was summarily cashiered as KMarts sports rep.

An NFL sports announcer also lost his job after observing that blacks were superior athletes because during Slavery, they were selectively bred and thus has thigh muscles running up into their backs.

Doug Tract, aka, the Shock Jock GreaseMan, was also so banished.  And so on, and so on.

Evidently, if you are in today’s media, speaking ill of Blacks is the Third Rail.

Conversely, if you are Black and speak ill of Whites you might be invited to speak at press clubs, think tanks and university commencements.

Racism, per se, and sexism, per se, or even Sexual Orientationism (if such a terms exists) only goes one way.

If you are perceived by the leading MSM Illuminati to be of a protected Insular and Distinct Minority, you are free to spew as much sexist or racist hatred as you like, and may well be richly rewarded for being edgy, outspoken, brave in speaking truth to power and other noxious euphamisms for attacking the right groups.

Bottom line, Free Speech has been under assault for some time, and thus far, only the Left has been able to determine which speech is protected and which is to be severely punished.

The sooner we realize that PC is, and always has been, a direct attack on our First Amendment rights, and the sooner we act on that knowledge, the better off this country will be.  PC is simply un-American.

That doesn’t make sense. Most bulldykes aren’t hos. In contrast to the normally slutty gay men, bulldykes and most lesbians for that matter, are usually monogamous creatures.

Of course it doesn’t make sense!  Imus is just a foolish loudmouth who uses his radio and TV forum to beat up on people.  You can pretty much ignore anything he says as being devoid of content, which also applies to any loudmouth who is in love with the sound of his own voice.

Imus’ crime was being a white man.

I thought his crime was saying some offensive things about a women’s basketball team, but I guess I haven’t been following this story very closely. It’s really a crime to be white? Wow.
Dave on April 11, 2007 at 02:56 am

Blacks in media say far worse than that everyday. Why are they not being castigated?

And Imus has said far worse about blacks, gays, women, hispanics, orientals, children,,,well, y’all get the picture.

And yea, Marty, they are a rough looking crowd. Last year a local sports radio guy was making this point about college basketball players, male and female, though he did focus on the gals looking less than reputable.

Were the advertisers not aware of Imus and his equally awful comments prior to Al Sharpton?  Personally, I don’t watch Imus and never would. BUT, IF I were advertising my product on his time??? Hmmm…

Zsa Zsa on April 11, 2007 at 04:39 am

I think it is unfortunate that he is being forced off the air.  Sharpton and Jackson need to know that any slip of their tongue will now require death of their jobs as well.  I do have to say that I do think he went a bit too far, but do agree that is this had been said by a black man nothing would have happened.

That being said, this language is coarsening in our country but Sharpton and Jackson should be on a crusade to rid hip hop of hos bitches and such from the language.  again, another topic for another day.

Puzzlefeet on April 11, 2007 at 03:36 pm

Here’s the bottom line, IMO:  The Fifth Amendment

No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.

Since Imus did nothing illegal, and we have no precedent for making certain words illegal, by suspending him, he has been penalized as if he committed a criminal act.  He has been deprived of “property” without due process of law.  Now, if his listenership dried up spontaneously, that is not a violation of the Fifth, but for an institution to do it is such a violation, IMO.  Comments?

robert108 on April 11, 2007 at 03:54 pm

Well that’s actions of the government.  Drudge is reporting that Imus’s sponsors are deserting him.

They are private businesses and can do what they want.

So although his audience is yet to desert him, he’s likely to lose his job at the networks.

Of course if that happens, it’s likely he gets picked up on a radio syndication deal.

So he’ll be ok but still and idiot.

His employer can put him on hiatus or fire him or do whatever they want and it doesn’t bear on the constitution.

Radio and TV are both under the control of the FCC, a govt entity.  Using the same logic that was used to force quota programs on private military academies, then, no radio or TV station or network is completely private, so the Fifth applies.

robert108 on April 11, 2007 at 04:04 pm

Nah, R108, I don’t believe he is being deprived of constitutional protections while I don’t agree with what NBC just did.

I guess Imus will have to check his contract with MSNBC to see if it has a “morals” clause, which most do.

Puzzlefeet on April 11, 2007 at 04:16 pm

r108
you are arguing that the constitution somehow protects imus’s income because his industry is regulated by a government agency? don’t burn your fingers on that crackpipe buddy!

Yun Chu said, “You must strictly not express in words what is very significant. Both dragon and snake are killed in one blow.”

Sparkie Arbuckle on April 11, 2007 at 04:20 pm

TW: My reading of the Fifth is that it doesn’t just apply to the federal govt, but defines the rule of law for all citizens at all levels.  I do agree that if the FCC were not involved, though, it would be a tougher call.  Sponsors, of course, are not obliged to do anything other than follow their bottom line.

robert108 on April 11, 2007 at 04:22 pm

Well I don’t know what kind of employment contract that Imus has and that may change things, but in general I think an employee has a right to walk off the job and a employer has a right to dehire the employee.

Imus insulted one too many people. His comment was so uncalled for. I wonder why he decided to say that? Has he been listening to too much rap?

Zsa Zsa on April 11, 2007 at 04:28 pm

I suspect Imus, like most entertainers, has a clause that makes the contract null and void if by any action they say or do anything that damages the reputation of their employers, without their having to pay off the contract.

No matter the age or state of health, for a military man it is always glorious to tilt at windmills, rescue a fair Dulcinea and be a gallant knight in armor in a glorious cause.

Don has a contract that is negotiated so the terms of the agreement will be checked.  I’m sure that the contract has been checked or NBC wouldn’t have fired him.

Puzzle...I think you are right. I just wonder why someone has not complained before this? Especially because supposedly he says stuff like this all the time???

Hey, puzz? Why is AFTRA so deafeningly silent on Imus being abused in this manner? He is a Union Brother.

Or so you imply here.

Don has a contract that is negotiated so the terms of the agreement will be checked.  I’m sure that the contract has been checked or NBC wouldn’t have fired him.

What’s your deal? Union only protects certain groups of people?
