She Was For It Before She Was Against It

The famous or should I say infamous Victoria Toensing now comes out swinging that injustice is being done to poor Scooter Libby.

One remembers Ms. Toensing and her husband Joe diGenova during the Clinton impeachment days when they couldn’t get enough of appearing on virtually every cable news show justifying every investigation of President Clinton and stumping as leakers in chief for Kenneth Starr.

Thou doth protest too much Victoria, thou dost protest too much.

So, are you saying that emulating John Kerry and likeminded liberals is a bad thing?

I don’t have a dog in this fight! I just thought it curious that you would paraphrase the John Kerry flip flop to criticize anything!

The famous or should I say infamous Victoria Toensing

I don’t know how big a part she could have played in the Clinton impeachment. I don’t think I ever heard her name until yesterday.
Did she not play nice with the Clintons???

P: As usual, you are being intellectually dishonest.  Clinton was guilty, and Scooter is not.  Victoria very clearly stated the reasons in both cases, so she is being consistent.  It is you who are inaccurate here.  Your usual bleating of the “you do it, too” argument is sad, but typical of you.
In case you missed it, your mistake was in stating that the Clinton prosecution and the Libby prosecution are equivalent; they are not.

Puzzle,

A couple of questions, please:

1.  Why do you label Victoria Toensing as “infamous?” Is it simply because she favored the Clinton impeachment and opposes the Libby indictment, while you hold the opposite opinion?  That’s both thin and petty.

2.  Exactly what part of Ms. Toensing’s OpEd is not factually correct?

Bat: There you go again!  Asking for facts; the nerve of you!

Let’s see for starters:
She claims that Fizgerald had a “low threshold for bringing a criminal case”.

Let’s see she charges Fitzgerald “with ignoring the fact that there was no basis for a criminal investigation from the day he was appointed....” The CIA requested the investigation of the outing of one their covert agents.  He was assigned to do a thorough investigation and he did.

Her entire piece is based on the meme: ‘there was no underlying crime, therefore no indictments should have followed.’ Yet she argued the opposite on her over 300 appearances during the Clinton impeachment time.  That is the hypocrisy of Victoria Toensing. Oh and B1 300 appearances on Geraldo et al qualifies as infamous in my book.

R108, I guess the jury will decide whether Libby is guilty or not guilty and you’re not on the jury.  So how about we wait and see what happens. He may very well be found not guilty but let’s wait and see.

Puzzle,

Your explanation for your use of the word “infamous” does nothing so much as confirm the fact that those of you on the Left take liberties with the American English language that normal people find peculiar, if not bizarre.  If those idiosyncratic liberties were sexual rather than linguistic you’d be arrested.

As for Saint Valerie, I believe the correct description of her status was that her employment at CIA was classified.  But that does not rise to the level of “covert agent,” and certainly not for purposes of the Intelligence Identities Protection Act.  If CIA has actually acknowledged that Plame/Wilson was a “covert agent” as you guys on the Left so enjoy trumpeting, perhaps you could pass on a citation to some authoritative documentation to that effect?

Comparing Toensing’s stand on the Libby trial and her take on the Clinton impeachment is spurious and you know it.  An impeachment is a political event, not a criminal trial.  Just ask Alcee Hastings.  Besides, Clinton was convicted of perjury and subornation, was he not?

I guess the jury will decide whether Libby is guilty or not guilty and you’re not on the jury.  So how about we wait and see what happens. He may very well be found not guilty but let’s wait and see.

No matter what the jury finds, this trial(of Libby) is a political farce.  BTW, the jury did find Clinton guilty, a fact that you failed to mention here.  You brought up the comparison, so why do you ignore Clinton’s guilt?
Victoria was one of the authors of the FISA legislation, so she can be considered an expert on the matter of whether or not there was any underlying crime in the Libby persecution, and she has clearly stated that there is not.  Furthermore, Fitzgerald has publicly admitted it, as well.  When you come out of your denial and face that fact, your position seems ridiculous, doesn’t it?

B1, Spurious, naah. It is absolutely comparable.  She made herself the darling of the media over three hundred times during the Clinton investigations so it is an appropriate comparison now since she now opined on the Libby investigation.

R108, If I remember correctly no crimnal jury found Clinton guilty of anything.  Didn’t he reach a plea agreement?

The issue at trial is whether Libby lied to FBI investigators or to the grand jury.  There does not need to be an underlying crime for Fitzgerald to have filed charges for lying to the grand jury.  Otherwise Clinton would never have been charged either.  Get it now, R108. You are now being willfully ignorant.

Puzzle,

When you next take a break from plotting to expropriate the earnings of American’s working men and women, and undermining the American economy in the process, please take a moment to actually look up the definition of the word “infamous,” and then explain, cogently, which definition you think applies to Ms. Toensing and how.

See, when words have commonly accepted meanings it not only facilitates the transmission of ideas between us, but it also helps the rest of us normal people determine more accurately when you those of you on the left are making shit up again.

Infamous:  having a bad reputation; well-known for something.  A simple search on google would get you a definition.  I would think that you would know how to do that.

So, next question B1.

Puzzlefeet on February 19, 2007 at 12:41 pm

Phooey!

Infamous, adj.

1 : having a reputation of the worst kind : notoriously evil <an infamous traitor>

2 : causing or bringing infamy : DISGRACEFUL <an infamous crime>

3 : convicted of an offense bringing infamy

Puzzle,

You have not yet demonstrated that Victoria Toensing fits any of these three, more accurate and specific definitions of the word “infamous” which you used so recklessly in describing her.  Not even close.

All you HAVE managed to demonstrate is that your personal opinion of Toensing is negative, that you disagreed with her conclusions regarding both Clinton and Libby, and that you were offended that she was afforded so many public opportunities to make her point.  None of which qualifies as infamous.

Sour grapes, on the other hand…

“Poverty of goods is easily cured; poverty of the mind is irreparable.”

Bat One on February 19, 2007 at 01:28 pm

Oh so now I have to use your definition.  You asked me for a definition, I google and found a definition but it doesn’t fit comport with what you found, so you write: “phooey”.

Then you find your definition and demand that I choose one of your options.  My response: Phooey!

Puzzlefeet on February 19, 2007 at 02:08 pm

Puzzle,

You flatter me unnecessarily!  To have “my” definitions confused with those of Merriam Webster is truly an honor, particularly for someone like me for whom the precise yet imaginative use of language is a mark of civilized accomplishment.

You, on the other hand, are apparently still stuck on sour grapes, and have yet to explain how any definition of the word “infamous,” the correct ones or your murkier, less authoritative version, applies to Ms. Toensing.

Say… is it possible she just makes a whole lot more money than you do?
