SA Fortune Telling Not Always on the Mark

Recently on Say Anything, Anna posted the following story about a protest to global warming. The ridiculous call was raised that a vast majority of the signatories were Medical Doctors.

The problem with this logic: none of the signatories professions or degrees were listed.

So, in a random sample of the A list (the list Anna posted), we will see how many of the scientists fit the claim.

Earl M.J. Aagard. Biologist. PhD in Fish and Wildlife Biologist. Teaches Ornithology and Earth sciences.

Douglas E. Applequist: Chemist (apparently of the bio variety that matters so much).

Harold H. Arndt (geologist)

Those I couldn’t find info on: Randall Allen, John Henry Alsop, Joshua C. Allen, Steve E. Aeschbach, Timothy Andreychek (definitively), Elton E. Arensman, Bob J. Ascherl, Winifred Alice Asprey, Richard A. Aurand, Azizollah Azhdam, Monroe Ashworth

(Full diclosure, After, Joshua C. Allen, my 3rd choice, I abandoned full randomness, in favor of rare names, picked closest to the nesrby random name I chose).

Out of the three I could find actual info on, 2 of the 3 fit the criteria put forward by our beloved imbecile sparkie for counting. The rest are still a mystery.

The reason for challenging the study is bogus.

Your post is a bit confusing. Are you telling us that they just gathered signatures from random people on the street?

beloved imbecile sparkie

Do we get a vote on the “beloved” part?

A troll is someone who only wants to stir up trouble, not have an honest debate.  Some signs that a poster is a troll:
* Dodges questions from other posters * Refuses to give sources
* When one of its arguments is shown to be false, either ignores the proof or moves the goalposts.  Heh. (From the LGF faq)

Kenny.  I started similar research, but Sparkie did not join with his definition of a scientist.  Certainly those from hollywood are not.

I’m sure Sparkie read that criticism and was only repeating it.

What’s going to happen to US industry when the global warming extremists like John McCain double the price of electricity?  I would think all these factories will close and set up in countries where they aren’t scared of technology.

On the other hand, the credibility of the list would be well served if the signatories were required to include the school where they completed their degree, the field of their degree and their current occupation.

We should be able to figure out who everybody is that is a signatory, otherwise it is a bit like an anonymous list.

Anonymous, heck I can’t even read their signatures.

No, it’s pretty much impossible to find out what most of these people do. A quick google or yahoo search with “Dr. Whatever, PhD” brings up a list of links to posts like Anna’s. Many of the names are very plain (like Randall Allen) and bring up multiple hits. It’s completely possible that these are all random signatures, but they could all be climatologists for what little we know.

Chief, it’s not even that he needed to clarify what definition of a scientist was. He just threw out the unproven notion that these were all MDs of VMDs...why? Because they LOOK like MDs. Apparently you can tell a lot from a name.

Since I pointed out he didn’t look these people up, he ran off. I was giving him one more opportunity to try and defend his worthless position...but it appears he knows better.

Agreed, unfortunately, we weren’t given that info. And that would probably triple the length of the list. It’s already huge with just names.

A corollary question is “why does it matter?” Reality is that the claims and hypotheses of the global warming religion are pretty straightforward, and can be evaluated by anyone with a half decent background in logic and statistics.

And yes, you’ll find that most state funded climatologists agree with the hypothesis for a very simple reason; government ain’t funding people who doubt the hypothesis.  He who pays the piper calls the tune, no?

And it’s fascinating to see liberals and hippies tell us to just trust the government.  Fascinating.

I just read John Lott’s Freedomomics.  In the introduction he recounted the pressure he faced as a University Teacher in giving what he thought was an honest explanation of the facts and figures.

He was basically told that the economics department was going to be forced to lay off people if he didn’t lay low.

Economics is pretty much cut and dried when it comes to facts and figures.  Even so the lefties couldn’t help but suppress them.

This really made me think about what kind of economic data we get if you can’t trust university employed economists.

Where else do you get “independent” information?

I’m thinking that the global warming community is a thousand times as aggressive to silence dissent.
