Somali pirates on hijack spree since weekend
MOMBASA, Kenya – Somali pirates were back to business as usual Tuesday, defiantly seizing four more ships with 60 hostages after U.S. sharpshooters rescued an American freighter captain. “No one can deter us,” one bandit boasted. The freed skipper, Richard Phillips, will return home to the United States on Wednesday, after reuniting with his 19-man crew in the Kenyan port of Mombasa, according to the shipping company Maersk Line Ltd.
The brigands grabbed more ships and hostages to show they would not be intimidated by President Barack Obama’s pledge to confront the high-seas bandits, according to a pirate based in the Somali coastal town of Harardhere.
“Our latest hijackings are meant to show that no one can deter us from protecting our waters from the enemy because we believe in dying for our land,” Omar Dahir Idle told The Associated Press by telephone. “Our guns do not fire water. I am sure we will avenge.”
Yup, that really worked so well.

If we make it a one sided slaughter, this will never end. If we make it clear with overwhelming firepower followed by constructive engagement, we can take the excuses away from the warlords and get that waterway clear again. All we have to do is enforce the international laws on dumping and fishing and protect their territorial waters. All they have to do is deal with their gangs. I wonder though which European and other nations are going to get caught red-handed with illegal dumping and so on, and why given that Obama has doubtlessly been briefed on it, he continues to sit on his butterfingers.
Maybe some of those socialist leaning nations of the EU he would like to be cozy with are doing bad nasty things and giving a perfect pretext to the pirates to act? We take that away and they have no reason to do anything out there. Why doesn’t Obama just take all the excuses away from them? Who is being protected here? Since this has been going on since the Clinton administration at the very least, which covers Bush, you’d think the envirofreaks would be all over this as a chance to point to what Bush was covering up.
Yet they are dead silent.
I wonder why.
