PBS: Attacks the Greatest Generation

The War of the World

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

A series on PBS staring on June 30th wherein

Harvard historian Niall Ferguson presents an explosive challenge to common assumptions about the 20th century. In this extraordinarily written and stunningly filmed series, Ferguson challenges nearly all our enduring assumptions about World War II which was, without question, the most destructive conflict the planet has ever seen.

PBS slaps WW-II veterans in the face by saying that we were an evil empire that partnered with a mass murderer (Stalin) to beat Germany, and because we bombed Dresden and other German cities, along with Nagasaki and Hiroshima, it makes America no better than Hitler.

It even warns WW-II veterans with a weak heart to not watch this program. This is revisionist history at its worst, broadcast by the ultra-liberal, propaganda ministry for the DNC, being PBS and produced by another freaking America hater at Harvard.

Horrible Travesty

Yes, it is right up there with Katrina and 9-11.

We should censor it.

Isn’t there another thread about liberals trying to squelch dissent on the front page right now?

It is a documentary for god sakes, it is not a horrible travesty.

Let the ignorant have their dissent at the expense of their own reputation. Both the author and PBS.

The majority of Americans know better.

Just FYI Hawk: Travesty is a distorted or debased version of something; to imitate or ridicule something in a grotesque or distorted manner. Thus, Gene was on target, wasn’t he? Why do you support revisionist history, especially when it denigrates the lives and reputations of truly “The Greatest Generation” of Americans?

No matter the age or state of health, for a military man it is always glorious to tilt at windmills, rescue a fair Dulcinea and be a gallant knight in armor in a glorious cause.

Documentary?  Just like ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ and ‘Fahrenheit 911’ were documentaries?

Propaganda and a disgrace to the memory of the soldiers who valiantly gave their lives.

No they are not. They are just telling the story as they know it.

ellinas on June 26, 2008 at 02:52 pm

No my friend Ellinas, IMO, they are deliberately, with malice restating American history to conform to their own anti-Military and anti-American bias. They are taking things like our relationship with Stalin and linking his later purges and mass murders with the U.S.’ solely to make it appear as if we were accomplices to his atrocities. They know that is untrue, they know we were always suspicious and uneasy with Stalin but had to face the more urgent threat to world peace with less than saintly partners.

They are taking the military necessities of bombing major German and Japanese cities to minimize the loss of innocent lives and making it appear we were on the same moral plane as Hitler and the Holocaust.

These things are, IMO, deliberate twisting of the facts to fit what they perceive to be the new socialist, anti-American mindset among American voters today. It is Leftist propaganda, they hope to use these lies to expedite the quiet socialist revolution the Democrats have long been preparing for our future. Worse, it makes all the soldiers and the families of soldiers during WW-II appear to be dishonorable and it holds them up to ridicule as being part and parcel of Hitler and Stalins atrocities. It is, beneath contempt!

Reasonable people can claim that the use of the atomic bomb, especially the second atomic bomb, was not a necessity.  It was quite possibly a war crime.

Lestat on June 26, 2008 at 09:23 pm

The real leftie lie here is that we must be “nice” when we fight a war against an enemy that wants to destroy our way of life.  The only way to win such a war is to destroy the enemy’s way of life: That is the reality.
What matters is what we do afterward, compared to what they propose to do after they win.
Despite the liar right above me, the truth is that we needed the nukes to win, and we haven’t used them since, thereby blowing the theory that we have to be “nicer” than they were, or else we are just the same as they are.  Nothing could be farther from the truth.
We made them aware of the error of their ways, in a very direct manner.

Lestat,

I take it you are unaware of Operational Plan Downfall for the Invasion of Japan (consisting of two major invasions, code named Olympic and Coronet).  I suggest you go read up on them, and then compare the expected casualty rates for those operations to the 120,000 direct and follow on deaths attributed to the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

I think:
We did partner with Stalin. Approx. 60 million people were killed in Russia between 1920 and now. That’s a lot.

We did drop Abombs over two Japanese cities, full of civilians, despite the wishes of Ike, MacArthur, and many others. It was future-oriented advertising that cost Japan 150,000 civilians, easy.

Not until after our entry into WWII.  FDR’s commie admin and leftie writer Walter Duranty covered for Stalin in the Thirties.

One large difference is that the taxpayers support this revisionism.  At least PBS notes that communism was evil

we were an evil empire that partnered with a mass murderer (Stalin)

But I wonder if they will trot out that old saw, “well that version of communism was not the best (correct) one.?”

My goodness.  Have they not read Flyboys?  If they wanted to make a point, they could have mentioned that the bombing of Tokyo caused more deaths than Nagasaki and Hiroshima.

It isn’t revisionist history to tell the full story.  WWII, as we were told it for the past 60 years, was gallant, glorious and honorable.  War is never gallant, glorious or honorable.  It is a murder-machine.  The history PBS will air is available in history books, but it is rarely taught nor discussed. The atrocities committed by the allies, the alleged war crimes of the US and Britain, and the wanton extermination and murder of hundreds of thousands of civilians by US firebombing raids, and the millions killed, tortured, and enslaved in the fight against Communism after WWII, all these issues need to be addressed.  If we claim to be a free and just nation, we must look at our past objectively. Look at our mistakes.  Lower our heads and accept that some of things done in the name of democracy, were neither democratic nor humane.  Endeavor not to make those mistakes again, and learn from our past...so we are not condemned to repeat the mistakes.

sk on June 30, 2008 at 09:03 am

Rubbish.

WWII was necessary.  The world would not now be a better place if the German’s and Japanese had been allowed to achieve their aims, just as the world would not not be a better place had the Soviets been allowed to achieve their post WWII ambitions.

Your inability to make that pair of judgments reflects poorly on your understanding of history and morality.

This is pure lying leftie bullshit.  If you don’t win the war, your way of life perishes.  What matters is not what you have to do to defeat those who would destroy you, but what you do afterward.  We rebuilt the countries whom we defeated, and encouraged them to be free and prosperous.  You lying lefties who seek to compare us with the totalitarians who we defeated are seriously delusional.

sk.  Tell all then.  Tell how Stalin killed millions of his own people, more Jews, more Muslims, tortured, lied, murdered his own innocent civilians.  Tell how
Walter Duranty hid the murder and genocide of ten million (10,000,000) Ukranians and made any religion except the athiest one of communism permissible.  Tell how the JAPS ate our GIs.  Tell it, sk.  Did you learn any of the above in your school?
